If you have a horse lover in the family, sunrise tours at Pimlico should definitely be one of your spring traditions!

(And yes, they really are sunrise. They start at 6 AM. And YES, they are kid-friendly!)

The experience is truly a “behind the scenes glimpse” into the Maryland horse industry. The morning starts with a snack while watching the horses train on the race track.  You might just even get a glimpse at Epicenter, who is favored to win Saturday’s Preakness race. Then a guide from the Maryland Jockey Club will take you on a walking tour through the stables and you can see the jockey’s room, paddock, grandstand and maybe event step into the Winner’s Circle. You never know who you’ll meet along the way…

Sunrise at Pimlico

“This is the kind of tour where, honestly, I can never tell you exactly what’s going to happen because we go in a lot of different directions. If we see a trainer we know that we know will welcome us, we’ll go over and talk to him. If we see a horse we want to talk about, we’ll go there,” said tour director and guide Fran Burns on the Pimlico website. “I’ve actually had people do two tours because they want to get another tour guide’s take on what’s happening.”

Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes since you’ll be near the barns.

Tours are FREE and offered on a first-come, first serve basis. They run Tuesday, May 17 – Friday, May 20, 2022 from 6 AM – 9 AM at the Pimlico race Course. Sign-up for a tour time onsite and we definitely recommend getting there early!

Trust us, it’s one of the (cool)est things to do in Baltimore with kids. Worth all of the potential early morning grumbling you might hear in the car…
