Did you know that Ladew Gardens is home to an all-native butterfly house? It offers an up close and personal look at the lifecycle of a butterfly (which all kids know thanks to Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar!).
But unlike the caterpillar in Carle’s story, real caterpillars are pretty picky eaters. They only like specific plants, all of which are native to Maryland. The house is home to over 20 species of local butterflies, moths and caterpillars. You can learn about which plants (like milkweed and parsley!) to grow in your own gardens to attract and sustain local butterflies.
Docents lead 20 minute tours (super kid-friendly and engaging). You can sign-up for a tour time when you check-in at the front gatehouse. Butterfly House tours are free with paid admission and free for members — but you DO need an assigned tour time. Tours are available first-come, first-serve.
The butterfly house is only open July through late September from 9 AM – 3 Pm on days when the gardens are open. Dates and hours are subject to change. Face masks are required from unvaccinated guests.
Ladew Gardens is open Thursday through Tuesday (closed on Wednesdays) from 9 AM – 4 PM. Admission is $15/adult, $10/Seniors and Students, $4/child for kids ages 2-12, and children under 2 are free. Be sure to leave your favorite furry friend at home as pets are not permitted.
The cafe is currently closed BUT you can reserve a boxed picnic lunch from Classic Catering if you order in advance (hello, fab #parenthack!). To order a Picnic Box or Picnic Tote, call The Classic Catering People at 410.356.1666. Lunches must be ordered by noon the day before your visit. When ordering for Monday, please place your order by Saturday. Pick up your lunch at Admissions between 11 AM – 2 PM.
While you’re at the gardens, be sure to look for colorful hidden stones while you’re exploring the topiaries and visiting the Koi pond. The pirate ship-shaped topiary is always a favorite. Your kids can even get a scavenger hunt when you check-in!
