Baltimore is opening up — in a socially-distanced, safe way — and we are thrilled to bring back our “Things to Do with Kids” Monthly Lists! From Enoch Pratt Free Library’s Imagination Celebration to Kids Comedy Shows to LIVE performances of Alice in Wonderland, here are our favorite ideas for exploring the Greater Baltimore area with kids of all ages this May.

Please be sure to check websites before you go for registration requirements and the organization’s latest COVID precautions. Many programs are self-pacing and many others have capacity limits.

Go On a Park Safari with Nature Quest 2021!

Get ready to spread your wings and enjoy Maryland’s State Parks this spring and summer — Park Quest 2021 kicks off on May 1! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is currently offering 25 different bird-themed quests for families to participate in this year. Complete 12 or more quests by October 31st to be entered into the Park Quest Prize Drawing! MORE

Train a Giraffe at the Maryland Zoo

Last January, The Maryland Zoo launched brand new penguin and goat encounters. The experiences were so popular that they’ve added two new fun animal interactions for zoogoers: tortoise meet-and-greets and giraffe trainings! Tickets for animal experiences range from $15 to $59 and do not include general Zoo admission.* Experiences are intended for ages 5 and up. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Masks are required and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended for each experience. MORE

Take the City Nature Challenge

City Nature Challenge is an annual event that encourages community scientists in cities around the world to get nerdy with nature by spotting as many plant and wildlife species as possible and then tracking their sightings in the iNaturalist app.  Many local nature centers and conservation organizations have planned hikes and other activities to help get families outdoors as part of the challenge. Register for the Maryland Science Center’s Raingutter Regatta
Register and Design Your Boat in May

Set your course for science! Join Maryland Science Center on June 5 for their Raingutter Regatta. Learn what keeps a boat afloat as you design, build, and test a tiny boat at home, then set sail at the Maryland Science Center to test your ship’s seaworthiness! All teams must register in advance. Families are encouraged to work on one boat together. Registration includes one boat kit (shapeable hull, mast, rudder, and sail) to serve as the starting point for your not-so-high seas boat-building adventure! The rest is up to your imagination. MORE

Ride Thomas the Train

All aboard! Thomas the Tank Engine will be hosting outdoor events at the B&O Railroad Museum on May 14-16 & 21-23, 2021. With full health and safety protocols in place, this fun-filled event offers families the opportunity to hop on board an interactive train ride pulled by Thomas the Tank Engine, and enjoy access to family activities including lawn games, live entertainment to include a DJ and Gregory Mays the stilt-walker, photo ops, a bubble zone, special guest appearances from the horses of the First Mile Stable, and more. Help Kennedy Krieger ROAR for Kids!

Kennedy Krieger Institute will host its 17th annual, jungle-themed ROAR for Kids fundraiser this May! But they need you — and your kids — to help! Due to the pandemic, the fundraiser will be held virtually again this year as a weeklong celebration that includes an in-person CARnival. Starting Saturday, May 15, and lasting until Saturday, May 22, families can join in for daily activities to raise funds for research and programs that help kids at the Institute. On the last day, the event will conclude with a virtual version of the traditional 5K road run! MORE

Picnic and Paddle at Oregon Ridge Nature Center

It’s the unofficial start of summer! Kick it off with a paddle on the lake with a Naturalist, learn some basic paddling techniques. Bring a blanket and picnic lunch to enjoy by the lake afterward. Adults and children 8+; children ages 4 – 7 only as a third person, non-paddler. $10 per person ($6 for ORNCC Members). Register in advance. MORE
