The last fourteen months have created a whole new meaning of the word ‘pivot’ for area dance organizations… and Mid Atlantic Youth Ballet (MYB) is poised to pivot in another direction this Sunday: performing their first outdoor ballet.
85 Baltimore-area dancers will stage two full-length performances of “Alice in Wonderland” on Sunday at The Chrysalis at Merriweather Park. The amphitheater, which resembles a giant caterpillar emerging among the trees, is a fitting backdrop for a show that cleverly combines curiosity and imagination while bringing Lewis Carroll’s tale to life.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted our youth ballet company and other performance-based organizations for more than a year now,” said Nadia Letnauchyn, director of MYB. “While our return to the studios last June provided our students with the opportunity to dance through their participation in classes and camps, the live performance component — which satisfies half of our mission — has been missing until now. We are so grateful to be able to return to the stage to present Alice in Wonderland LIVE in a safe way. It is with much anticipation that our dancers are able to share their art with audiences once again.”
The show, intentionally designed for families and children, is a perfect introduction to live performance and dance. Families will be seated by pods on the grass, so it’s no big deal if your child gets a case of wiggles; they can move with the music along with the dancers. Since the show involves so many children, dancers and audience members will be masked during the production. It’s also BYOB — bring your own blanket (or chair!). Audience members are welcome to bring water, but no other outside food or beverages are permitted. The show is presented in partnership with Inner Arbor Trust.
“Alice in Wonderland was Mid Atlantic Youth Ballet’s inaugural spring performance in 2008,” said Nadia. “After the tumultuous year we’ve had, coming full circle offers the promise that MYB will to continue to thrive.”
Want to run away with your imagination on Sunday afternoon? Join MYB on their adventures at 2 PM or 5 PM. Tickets are on sale for $20 (children under 2 are free) and must be purchased in advance. But don’t be late! Ticket sales close on Saturday evening.
