Saturday, October 24th kicks off Lace Up to End Child Abuse 5K. This virtual run/walk event encourages families get outside, log some miles, and raise vital funds to help end child abuse and neglect in Maryland by raising funds for The Family Tree.

Why do we love this event and why is it this week’s Kindness Club pick? It’s family-friendly and a great way to give back while maintaining social distance. Participants have one week (October 24th – November 1) to log their 5K or 1 Mile Walk, so you can log the miles in on your own time. Toddler toddling with you? Break it up over a week. Have an hour with the big kids? Get out and go the distance!

Not only will you get some outdoor quality time with the kids, but you’ll be logging what we like to call “smile maker” miles! (Those are miles that do good and make you feel good.)Lace Up to End Child Abuse 5K

The Family Tree does incredibly important work for families in our community. They are the leading authority in Maryland for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. All funds raised as part of their virtual event support their child abuse prevention services and programs. Though their offices remain closed, their work continues, as they transitioned programs to online platforms providing parenting classes, home tele-visits, workshops, professional training, one-on-one tele-counseling, and more. Plus, their 24-hour Parenting HelpLine and online chat continue to provide help and vital information to parents in need.

Yes, these are challenging times for all of us, but the families that The Family Tree serve are struggling now more than ever. Research demonstrates that due to social isolation, the economic downturn, a sharp rise in unemployment, and high stress, communities are experiencing an increased risk of child abuse and neglect.

We can do something about this.

Want to help? Join (cool) progeny’s Lace Up to End Child Abuse 5K virtual team! Just visit our fundraising page here and select “join team.” Then make a donation (and ask friends to donate, too!) and log in your miles. You can also make a donation through our page or create your own team. They’re asking each 5K participant to raise $100 — but every little bit helps! Even a $5 donation.

Small acts of kindness make a BIG ROAR. And this week we are ROARing for The Family Tree. Join us!
