“Simon, a bright, red cardinal, hatched from his shell with a big gap in his beak. The gap made it hard for him to eat. Simon was not strong enough to fly. One day, he accidentally fell out of the nest and couldn’t get back to his family. Patty discovered the little bird and realized he suffered from the same thing as she, a cleft lip.”
July is Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month. Did you know that every year in the United States, about 7,000 babies (or 1 out of every 600) are born with a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate? Kids will learn about how every smile tells a story during this Facebook Live event! A young friend from the GBMC Cleft Team program will read “Smile with Simon.” We’ll then be joined by registered nurse and author Patricia Simon, who will share her story of “cleft patient to smile maker.” There will be lots of time for questions! To join the event, just go to (Cool) Progeny’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/coolprogeny at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 28th!
