Some people kick their holiday season off by setting up a tree. Others have favorite movies they like to watch. Others participate in casserole challenges.

But for more than 100 young dancers and community members, they’re starting their festivities by bringing The Nutcracker to life. On Friday, December 6, Saturday, December 7, and Sunday December 8, MidAtlantic Youth Ballet will perform their 13th production of the classic Christmas fairy tale at Towson University’s Stephens Hall Theatre. Join them to see the rats battle the wooden soldiers, take an adventure through the land of snow, and clap along during Uncle Drosselmeyer’s festive holiday party.

The performance is a true community endeavor – and that’s just how founder and director Nadia Letnaunchyn designed it. Chances are, you know someone in the cast or crew (because, Smalltimore!). In addition to dancers, the show involves a host of volunteers, including costume makers, reed flute player wranglers, program designers, and prop crews. From the youngest mouse (she’s three) to the eldest party guest (we won’t divulge their age), participating in this show has become a tradition for area families. After auditions each August, young dancers clamor to see the cast list and what “bigger kid” role they are lucky enough to perform this year. Dancers who were once mice running around on stage are now performing Aarabesque penchée in a more complex role. The dancers grow with the show, and vice versa.

The best part? This Nutcracker experience is perfect for families. It’s ok if your child won’t sit through the entire second act. This show is a magical way to introduce them to ballet!

As part of MidAtlantic Youth Ballet’s commitment to bring ballet to the greater community, the cast will perform the second act for several area schools on Friday morning.

Tickets are now on sale! We strongly suggest you purchase them in advance, but they will also be available at the door.

We’re giving one lucky reader a family four pack of tickets to Saturday’s evening performance! Enter by noon on Thursday, December 5th!
