The holiday season is the perfect time to teach your kids about giving back. Here are a few ideas …

The Give Back Sack

This holiday season, let your kids play Santa! Have them search their bedrooms and playrooms for no-longer used toys. Place them in the sack and then select a local charity to receive the donation. (Yes! Your kids will get excited about purging!) You can find the Give Back Sack at Wee Chic Boutique.

Here are a few organizations that accept gently used toys:

Volunteer Together or Donate to ShareBaby

Want to get hands-on with helping Baltimore’s babies in need? ShareBaby regularly hosts up to 20 volunteers at their family-friendly volunteer sessions. Volunteers help count, sort and package gear and diapers! All ages welcome, generally children ages 6+ can assist with tasks. Online registration required.

Have gently used coats, gloves, and hats for kids ages 0-5? Or diapers and wipes to donate? Drop them off at Wee Chic Boutique at Green Spring Station throughout the month of December. They’re collecting for ShareBaby!

Host a Soup-and-Sock Palooza

Did you know that the most requested item at shelters are socks? Invite your kids’ friends over for soup (it’s easy to make and everyone loves it on a chilly night!) and ask them to bring several pairs of socks and cans of soup with easy-to-open tops. Collect them in a basket and then pack them up for a local shelter for them to distribute.

Gift Wrap with Santa’s Helpers Anonymous

Santa’s Helpers Anonymous wraps more than 4500 gifts for families in need in the Baltimore area. Wrapping takes place over the course of one weekend in mid-December with four shifts. They provide everything — just bring your own scissors.

Mitzvah Day

Participate in Mitzvah Day on December 25

Join more than a thousand other volunteers and make a huge impact in one day through Jewish Volunteer Connection’s Annual Mitzvah Day! There are volunteer opportunities for every age, interest, and ability.

The epicenters of Mitzvah Day activities are located at both the Weinberg Park Heights and Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCCs where hundreds of volunteers assemble over 2,000 Winter Care Packages and participate in dozens of other hands-on volunteer projects in the ever-expanding Mitzvah Room.
