If you’re the parent of a boy, you know the boundless energy that he can bring. Boys are constantly exploring, engaging, and doing. Channeling that energy can be a challenge.
Imagine a program that specifically targets the needs of boys, nurtures what makes them unique, and provides an environment where they can safely explore, discover, inquire, and learn. Gilman School has launched a new pre-kindergarten to do just that!
Boys that have turned three before September 1 are welcome to apply to the program, and they are greeted each morning to a full day of engaging activities.
At the beginning of each day, students are given time for exploration centers, playtime, and morning meeting. They have a developmentally appropriate language arts block, where they engage in centers that deal with concepts such as rhyming and letter identification, and enjoy a snack before recess. Physical education, read a-louds, and math centers occupy much of the afternoon. Recess and classes such as music, art, library, science, MakerSpace, Spanish and French are offered — along with a rest (whew!) — before the day concludes. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of boys, and uses research-based, developmentally appropriate activities to engage and enrich the minds of each of their little learners.
Dr. Armistead Webster, Lower School Head, encourages parents to consider the benefits of enrolling their sons in Gilman’s program at the pre-kindergarten level rather than waiting until they are older.
“Enrolling boys at Gilman in pre-kindergarten offers them the opportunity to be a part of our Gilman community at the very earliest age,” said Dr. Webster. “Gilman is a family. Teachers at Gilman stay for generations of students, and they have the opportunity to see boys grow and mature from young boys to young men. Teacher/student relationships are formed here that last a lifetime because of the pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade experience that we provide. It is exciting that pre-kindergarten-aged boys have the opportunity to start their Gilman journey when their young minds are ready for all that Gilman has to offer.
