Baltimore dad Danny LaBrecque is on a mission to help preschoolers navigate modern society — by mixing retro-inspired puppetry and new media. His web-based television show, Danny Joe’s Tree House, aims to foster social-emotional learning in the digital age by bringing a human voice — and voices — back to children’s media using interactive digital platforms.
Inspired by the golden age of television, Danny LaBrecque’s web-based series Danny Joe’s Tree House uses a simplistic set and narrative framework similar to the retro Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood episodes we all grew up on. What kind of topics are explored in the Tree House? In the “Make a Wish” episode, Danny Joe, viewers, and Adam Candelaria of Holistic Life, Inc., investigate how “mistakes” or “failures” can be opportunities for creative, academic and emotional growth. Puppets are used to help children naturally project their feelings and emotions. Danny, his Tree House puppets, and special guests purposefully and thoughtfully tackle topics with preschoolers in mind. Season 2 special guests included David Newell (aka the original Mr. McFeely of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood), Jamaal “Mr. Root” Collier and Max “Mr. Max” Bent (of Baby Beats with Max & Root), and Erricka Bridgeford (creator of Baltimore Ceasefire 365), among others.
To date, LaBrecque has taped recorded his show in a home studio; but the Tree House has found a new home — at Black Cherry Puppet Theatre!
Now Baltimore preschoolers can interact with their favorite Tree House puppets — and Danny Joe — LIVE! LaBrecque is inviting area families to join him for two live tapings of the show this weekend! Want to join him in the Tree House? There are two opportunities to be a part of the live audience and catch the show on Sunday, October 6. Recordings will take place 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM and admission is $8-$12/person. (Space is limited, so we suggest jumping on those tickets!)
We can’t wait to see what topics Danny Joe and his friends delve into during Season 3!
