Want to help your child thrive in a 21st century learning environment? Think beyond the after school STEM workshop. Instead, try a dance class.
“Studying dance helps develop creativity, teamwork, confidence, critical thinking, self-discipline, physical health, and the ability to work collaboratively,” said Dr. Susan Kirchner, Towson University professor and former chair of the Department of Dance.
Perfecting a pirouette does more than just develop a mind-body connection; it might just help your child think outside the box during their next science experiment.
Towson University Community Dance (TUCD) is an extension of the university’s dance department and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance. Their mission? To foster “dancing for a lifetime.” Classes are offered for ages 3 through adult. Your child (or you!) can benefit from the University’s renowned faculty and take classes in ballet, modern dance, tap, jazz, or hip hop. Creative movement and dance fundamentals classes are offered for littles as young as three.
Dancers at TUCD learn more than just technique — they learn to find their artistic voice.
“TUCD excels in a way I haven’t experienced at other dance programs. Their teachers combine top-notch training with a true nurturing environment. All dancers, recreational through those who want to be professional, thrive here,” said Andrea Weir, mother of three TUCD dancers.
Unlike some other dance studios that request annual tuition contracts, TUCD offers semester-based pricing for instruction. This is a great option for kids who may not be ready to commit to a full year of dance. Worried that your preschooler might not have the discipline for ballet? Don’t be! Classes for kids under 5 are specifically designed to stimulate imagination and ignite creativity, while developing awareness of the five Dance Elements: Body, Space, Time, Energy and Force.
This fall, children’s classes are offered Tuesday, September 3 through Monday, December 16. Program tuition begins at $224 per class, per semester. Towson University Faculty/Staff/Alumni receive a 10% discount off full tuition of single classes and two-class packages.
Still not sure? Why not “try it before you buy it?” For those children that are new to dance, TUCD offers a free sample class in any genre within their Children’s Dance program. All you need to do to schedule a session is call their administrative office.
