‘Tis the season for New Year’s Resolutions…  and as the saying goes, “the state of your bed is the state of your head.” So before you start thinking about self improvement, think about space improvement. When your space reflects your values and personality, you’re more likely to tackle those trickier New Year’s Resolutions. You know the ones — like when you promise yourself you’re going to read three books per week or walk six miles a day until you remember, “Oh yes, I have toddlers.”

Whether you’re planning to improve your health, your wealth, or your well-being in 2019, improving your home is a great place to start.

We chatted with realtor Angela Glorioso of The Balcerzak Group to get her advice on what resolutions you should be making for your home in 2019.  We love that her suggestions are simple, won’t break the bank, and — most importantly — aren’t intimidating!

Get A Handle On the Clutter

Declutter is always the first thing! Are you keeping something even though you know it doesn’t fit in the space? Holding onto large furniture pieces only makes your house look smaller.

“We run into this a lot because the client will say ‘we just kept that because we didn’t know what to do with it,” said Angela. “Also, when they look at their house as a whole it is overwhelming.”

Her suggestion? Break it down. Take five minutes and spend it on one toy bin or the bathroom vanity. Little by little, you can clean out, organize, and conquer decluttering your home.

Update Your Décor

“You see in a lot of homes that life happens and families get into a routine — but your home doesn’t need to have same feel,” said Angela.

Changing up some small things can brighten up your day and your family will take notice. Replace tired, old throw pillows or get new covers for them. Update your picture wall with some new photos or purchase a new blanket that compliments your throw pillows. Maybe change the color scheme in your kitchen with little nick knacks that can brighten the space. Sure, a bathroom remodel is a great way to update decor — but little fixes and updates go a long way and can be budget-friendly.

Just Add Paint

This is the one update that can often overwhelm, said Angela. “But once you break down what you can do in a timely manner, it puts it all into perspective!”

Walk through your house and look at it objectively. Pretend you’re a buyer (even if you aren’t thinking of selling). Trim need touch-ups? Crack on the ceiling? Water damage (gasp!) Fix it now, rather than later.

“Cabinets are a huge upgrade in our staging of homes,” said Angela. “You can spend up to $800-1800 on painting your cabinets with a professional and add instant value to your home. Change out the hardware and you are looking at a new kitchen!”

Don’t want to hire a professional? You can take this project on yourself, but Angela says you should go into the project eyes wide open because it will take time, even though it will save money in the long run.

Updating bathrooms is another great option for adding value to your home, and paint can make a big impact. Have an olive green or baby blue bathtub? Epoxy Spray is the answer! It can last up to 5-10 years and can completely change the look of your bathroom.

Clean Those Carpets

Doesn’t sound as appealing or fun, but cleaning your carpets can make a huge difference. Not only does it take care of germs and dirt and who knows what else on your carpet, it will give a fresh look for new year. And, let’s be honest, it’s one less thing you have to worry about with the kids rolling around on the carpets.

Add Curb Appeal

“A lot of people think ‘It’s winter, I don’t need to worry about outside'” said Angela.  “This is definitely false.”

Go for a nice, clean outside winter look by clearing leaves and shrubs that aren’t coming back in the spring. You’ll also want to make sure your gutters are clean of debris.

But it’s not all cleaning and clearing… you can change up the look of your house, too!

“Winter is a great time to repaint the front door and add a nice wreath for a fresh look.”
