Editor’s Update, September 13: Due to impending weather, this event has been postponed until April 6, 2019.

International recording artist Candice Hoyes is touring the East Coast this fall — and she’s coming to Motor House on Saturday to offer a FREE workshop for kids and families!

Hoyes’ voice has been compared to Eartha Kitt, Nancy Wilson and Lena Horne. While her performance on Friday evening is a celebration of Billie Holiday that’s intended for adults, her Saturday workshop is geared toward families. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to groove and swing to the soulful rhythms of jazz with Hoyes. Children will learn about the artistry of Billie Holiday, along with the use of voice, instruments and storytelling through jazz. This hour-long interactive presentation offers families a creative outlet to explore jazz through storytelling, movement, songs and play.

“We’re thrilled to offer this family-friendly workshop to complement Candice’s Billie Holiday-inspired concert,” said Cassandra Miller, managing directory of Motor House. “You can never start too young with appreciating jazz and musical legends like Billie Holiday. Motor House is proud to be offering playful programming that makes learning about this music so much fun for kids and adults.

A Harvard grad, Hoyes has recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Philip Glass, and Wycliffe Gordon. She is a contributing culture writer for Shondaland, Los Angeles Review of Books, Columbia Journal of Gender and Law and Blavity. Her acclaimed first album, On Turquoise Cloud, featured rare Duke Ellington songs that blur the line of jazz and classical music. She is currently writing and recording her second album, which is set for a 2019 release.

The FREE family workshop will be held on Saturday, September 15th from 11 AM – 12 PM. If you’re looking for a (cool) date night, why night check out Motor House the night before and catch Hoyes’ concert? Concert tickets are just $15.
