Baltimore is lucky to be home to several art museums — including one dedicated entirely to the ‘inner voices’ of self-taught artists: The American Visionary Art Museum. Recently declared “the best family activity” by Baltimore Jewish Times, the AVAM is sure to spark creativity in even the tiniest of Picassos.
But the museum doesn’t just want kids to experience their art exhibits; they want museum goers of all ages to engage in the creative process as well.
“We want them to get their hands messy,” said Beka Plum, Director of K-12 Education. “We want them to be inspired by something at the museum.”
On the second floor of the Jim Rouse building is a colorful classroom space designed for artistic imagineering. One Saturday per month, the museum invites the public into the space to create something whimsical inspired by a museum exhibit as part of their Weekend Walk-In Workshops. Workshops aren’t about drawing or paper-and-crayons type of art. Projects might be making cosmic eggs out of clay and sparkly bits. Or maybe using recycled objects to build a reclaimed robot. Or maybe they provide all of the materials to create a beaded mosaic bunny.
Best part? Registration isn’t required (just drop in!) and projects are just $5/person.
Before or after the workshop, wander through the museum’s gallery. The current show — which runs through September 2 — is all about life’s greatest mysteries. Part of the museum’s mission is to draw attention to America’s history as a mecca for forward-looking innovators, optimists, dreamers and doers. It’s a place where imagination comes to life.
