Motor House invites children ages 6-12 to groove and swing to the soulful rhythms of jazz with recording artist Candice Hoyes. Children will learn about the artistry of Billie Holiday, along with the use of voice, instruments and storytelling through jazz. This hour-long interactive free presentation offers families a creative outlet to explore jazz through storytelling, movement, songs and play. Hoyes’ voice has been compared to Eartha Kitt, Nancy Wilson and Lena Horne. She uses themes such as the Jazz Age, feminism and black history as her music and teaching inspiration and is a lecturer at Jazz at a Lincoln Center. A Harvard grad, Hoyes has recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Philip Glass, and Wycliffe Gordon. She is a contributing culture writer for Shondaland, Los Angeles Review of Books, Columbia Journal of Gender and Law and Blavity. Her acclaimed first album, On Turquoise Cloud, featured rare Duke Ellington songs that blur the line of jazz and classical music. She is currently writing and recording her second album, which is set for a 2019 release. MORE

Johnny Appleseed Festival

Each year, Weber’s Cider Mill Farm celebrates the beginning of the fall season with their annual, Johnny Appleseed Festival. As you probably know, the story goes that Johnny Appleseed (who’s real name was John Chapman) traveled about a great part of the country planting apple seeds. Johnny was a friend to everyone he met. Indians and settlers — even the animals — liked Johnny Appleseed. His clothes were made from sacks and his hat was a tin pot. He also used his hat for cooking. His favorite book was the Bible. Now there is a good chance that you may meet Johnny Appleseed (or at least, an actor portraying him) when you come to visit Weber’s Cider Mill Farm during the festival. Lots of fun activities for the whole family. Admission includes 1-hayride, and all day admission to the barnyard activity area with the straw maze, mini-straw maze, Hillside Slide, Duck Races, and more. MORE

17th Annual Pigtown Festival

Join over 1,500 attendees at this family-friendly event to benefit Pathfinders for Autism! Professionally managed by Charm City Run, this 5K course meanders through The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and the adjacent Druid Hill Park. There is also a 1 Mile Fun Run and Walk, allowing for athletes of all levels to participate. Spend a fantastic afternoon at a Hungry Caterpillar tea party! Discover how caterpillars transform themselves into beautiful butterflies and enjoy photo ops as your little one dons his/her own pair of wings and journeys through the nature center. Meet, sing and play with Drama Learning Center’s giant, talking caterpillar and his young companion, Alice. Afterward, sit and savor a full tea service by Sweet Simplici-Tea tea room.
