Know before you go! Here are a few tips before heading to Go Ape for a family adventure…
Go Ape! Tips for Families
Treetop Adventures is for everyone!
With 16 locations in 14 states, you won’t have to travel far to find your adventure. There are four courses within Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia that offer an immersive outdoor recreation experience. And just in case your friends don’t believe you’re now a certified adventurist, everyone receives a certificate of completion at the end of their experience with a 25% discount for you to share with friends, family, or use at your next Go Ape Adventure.
Wait, my young kids can do this? (Yes! If they are 3 feet, 3 inches tall!)
The Lums Pond course in Bear, Delaware and the course at South Run Park in Springfield, Virginia offer the Treetop Adventure course and the Treetop Jr course. The Jr course has no age limit, but a minimum height requirement of 3 feet 3 inches and is a 1-hour introduction to the high-ropes activity, so the kids can even do this course on their own. The Treetop Adventure course requires that you’re 4’7’ and a minimum of 10 years old. This course is a 2-3 hour aerial adventure that requires all kids to be accompanied by an adult, but in all honesty, the family will want to do this experience together since you’ll be wanting the encouragement of your peeps to persevere through this epic course!
Which of their 16 Go Ape! locations are closest to us?
The Rock Creek Treetop Adventure in Rockville, MD features 6 sections of treetop obstacles, each section leading you higher into the forest canopy. With 6 zip lines, 44 unique crossings like the Stirrups, Twister and 2 Tarzan swings, guests are guaranteed a one of a kind forest adventure with killer views. This course requires you to be 4’7”, a minimum of 10 years old, and accompanied by an adult if you are 15 and under. The Rock Creek course also has the one and only skateboard-zip line. What’s a skateboard-zipline you ask? Imagine riding a skateboard down a hill while being strapped to a zip-line then all of a sudden you drop the skateboard and you’re soaring through the air over the breathtaking views of the park! Sounds exhilarating, right?!?
What if my child gets scared?
This brings us to the question, “what if we get the kids out on the course and they freeze up?” Don’t you worry as Go Ape has a wonderful staff who goes through extensive training. All participants are required to go through a safety brief to “try out” elements of the course like practicing a zip-line and tarzan swing all while members of staff are right there with you so you can get comfortable with what you’ll be doing out on the real courses.
What do we need to bring with us?
So how should you dress and what should you bring to make sure you’re ready for a day filled of zipping, climbing, and swinging? Best advice, dress for activity! You’ll want to make sure you have close-toed shoes, activewear, hair pulled back, and maybe bring those old gardening gloves you have lying around. Don’t fret if you don’t own gloves though because Go Ape sells gloves in their store for a nominal fee.
Go Ape also offers water at every stockade base of each section of the course so you won’t need to lug around water bottles for the entire family!
Think you’re ready to Go Ape?! Your story of adventure is just waiting to be written, all you need to do is swing on down to the nearest Go Ape Adventure right in your backyard!
