Welcome to Week Two of #CoolSummerFun! This week is splash week, so we’ll be sharing all things water fun.

MONDAY

Being Dolphin 4D

Crummy weather makes today a great day to visit the National Aquarium to see the Being Dolphin 4D show! Discover a world of complex, charismatic, highly intelligent creatures.. Skim the surface and swim to the depths with a pod of dolphins that share the ocean with all sorts of strange and wonderful animals. Set against breathtaking underwater views, this 4D Experience® explores how dolphins engage with each other to survive, thrive and play in the ocean. $5 with Aquarium admission. MORE

Visit a Duck Pond

It’s definitely duck weather! If you want to venture outside, grab your wellies and head to the Homeland Duck Pond or venture out to Patterson Park.

TUESDAY

Special Weekday Opening of Lake Allen

Enjoy wildlife dependent recreation at Patuxent Research Refuge’s North Tract’s Lake Allen on a weekday. The lake will be open for fishing, hiking, and nature observation all day long. Normal state and refuge regulations apply. MORE

Summer Wild Things at Charlotte’s Quest

Start time together with a good story, a short lesson and a craft, which guide learning as you venture outside to play games and explore the natural world around us. Topics include seasons, local critters and habitats that can be found in their park and maybe your own backyard! MORE

WEDNESDAY

Weekly Sailboat Races

Head to Annapolis on Wednesday night to watch 125+ yachts compete in midweek races that involve sailing around several marks in the Bay before heading back to Spa Creek for a finish in front of the Annapolis Yacht Club. Free.  MORE

Go On a Water Taxi Excursion

The Baltimore Water Taxi is perfect for families! Take the Yellow or Green Route to the Science Center to check out the planetarium and observatory. Then take the boat across the Harbor to the Aquarium to say hi to local favorite Calypso, the three-finned sea turtle who loves to eat. Hard Rock Café is right next door for a family friendly lunch. Hop back on the Yellow Route to Fell’s Point for dessert at Kilwin’s, and then ride the Blue or Purple Route over to Fort McHenry for a little history. Possibilities are endless! MORE

Red, White, and Blue Splash Play Date at acac Timonium

Do you have one of our Summer Adventure Passports? Then you’re invited to our Red, White, and Blue Splash Play Date on Thursday morning at acac! (Don’t have a passport? Get one here!). We’ll have patriotic pool games, popsicles, balloon art, and more from 10 AM – 12 PM. MORE

River Romp at Robinson Nature Center

Celebrate summer with activities down at the Middle Patuxent River to help you stay cool from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM! Bring your own non-perishable picnic, and join a Robinson Naturalist for fun, family-friendly river games before you enjoy your lunch. Search the stream for big and small animals, make boats and race them downstream and come dressed to get wet! We wade in the river and recommend close-toed water shoes. Participants must check in at the front desk and participation is limited to 25 people per program. Advanced registration required. $6/pp. MORE

Shoots and Letters: Pond Search

Plant the seeds of knowledge while learning basic skills and playing in the dirt with your little tots at Oregon Ridge Nature Center. Stories, crafts and adventures are all part of the fun from 10 AM – 11 AM! This week’s theme is pond search. MORE

Preschool Nature Series at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

Slither, swim, fly, or crawl your way to Jug Bay for nature programs specially designed for preschool-aged children. We will see, smell, hear, and touch our way around the Sanctuary and learn about nature through an interactive story, craft and hike. A brand new topic will be explored the second Thursday of each month. Extend your visit with free play at our Nature Play Space! Ages: 3-5 Fee: $6 per child. Registration required. MORE

FRIDAY

Free Pure Play Every (Fri)Day!

Little hands love little things. Let your kids’ imagination soar with loose parts play, featuring sand and water tables, bubbles, art, building toys, imagination playground, and more! FREE Facilitated play happens every Friday from 11am – 2pm at West Shore Park, next to the Walter Sondheim Fountain. Bring extra clothes so your kiddo can play in the fountain! MORE 

Family Fun: Wonderful Wetlands

Summer is finally here! Come meet some of the animals that live in the wetlands at the National Wildlife Center in Laurel from 10 AM – 1 PM. Take a self-guided wetlands walk, and learn why wetlands are so important. Enjoy hands-on activities, crafts and games — something fun for everybody. This is a drop-in program: come when you wish and leave when you’re ready. MORE

Generation Parkway Presents: Big Fish and Begonia

The family-friendly film series, Generation Parkway, presents a week-long run of new Chinese epic fantasy Big Fish and Begonia at the SNF Parkway Theatre. Twelve years in the making, BIG FISH & BEGONIA is a visually stunning cinematic adventure that captures the unique aesthetics, mystique, and rich cultural traditions of ancient China. SATURDAY

BioBlitz at Masonville Cove

Join the National Aquarium Conservation Team for their fifth annual BioBlitz! You’ll explore plants and wildlife in local ecosystems while learning more about simple things you can do to protect wildlife through hands-on conservation. BioBlitz is an all-day event during which scientists, naturalists, students, teachers, families and other volunteers work together to identify and record as many living organisms as they can find. Pre-registration is required for this event. MORE

Constellation History Tour 

Take a walking tour through 100 years of naval service! Historian and friend of the ship, John Barnard, leads an hour-long tour that focuses on many of the social changes that took place aboard USS Constellation during her century of service. Come aboard and take a close look at the real Old Navy, and see the difference time makes. This presentation is open to all visitors and is included with regular admission. No reservations are required. Youth Fishing Derby 

Introduce your kids to the basics of fishing with assistance from experienced fishermen from 9 AM – 12 PM! ACLEC Pontoon Pier (Rt. 40, just SW of Abingdon/Otter Point Road) Participants may bring their own rods and reels and tackle, or a limited number are available to borrow from OPCA. Pre-registration required. Ages 6-13. MORE

Father’s Day Canoe Trip

Dad is free! Bring your lunch and join a naturalist to explore the marshes and wildlife of Dundee Creek. $7 per person, $5 for members. Ages 8 & older. Space is limited. Reservations required. MORE

Summer Kick-Off Picnic Pontoon

With summer right around the corner, step onto the Water Strider at the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center and take a relaxing cruise on the creek as the natural world unfurls into its peak season. Enjoy a picnic style lunch while afloat. $10 per person. 30 lbs through adult.  MORE

 

WHERE TO USE YOUR SUMMER ADVENTURE PASSPORT THIS WEEK

If you purchased our $25 Summer Adventure Passport, consider using your Passport for a Family Sailing Lesson with Downtown Sailing Center or swinging by Wee Chic Boutique for new swimwear. Since the weather is kinda frightful as we start the week, head to Port Discovery Children’s Museum and play in their Water Works exhibit. Take your Passport to Free Pure Play Every (Fri)Day and splash in the Walter Sondheim Fountain. On Friday, head to the National Aquarium after 5 PM to watch your favorite ‘under the sea’ creatures splash!
