Gone are the days of just making a friendship bracelet or lazily lounging in an inner tube at summer camp. At McDonogh Summer Camps, kids are doing all kinds of amazing things.

“Young people today still enjoy the fun activities of traditional camps, but they have a lot of other interests, too,” says Ramzi Sifri, McDonogh’s Director of Summer Camps. “So, in addition to timeless summer experiences, we are always adding new camps that are on the cutting edge!”

5 Things You Never Knew You Could Do at Summer Camp

Change the World

Well, maybe campers won’t change the world in the course of a few days — but they’ll definitely create a plan of action! During McDonogh’s Young Innovators Camp, participants will research and further discover more about their passions to create something that will impact the world. And they will pitch their ideas, similar to the popular television show Shark Tank. Young entrepreneurs and dreamers are definitely wanted!

Channel Winston Churchill

Did you know that Winston Churchill was a fencing champion in his youth? Your child can hone swordplay skills during Fencing Camp at McDonogh. Each day will incorporate periods of fencing-specific instruction, drills, and bouting (sparring), as well as general physical activities, exercises, and games that will enhance fencing ability and performance.

Learn Outdoor Survival Skills

If your child has ever thought about trying out for Survivor, this might be the perfect camp experience for them! (But don’t worry — they won’t be foraging for food; lunch is included!) During McDonogh’s Outdoor Adventure Camp, campers experience a variety of outdoor activities that include rock climbing, rappelling, outdoor survival skills training, fishing, horseback riding, map and compass orienteering, swimming, mountain-bike riding on campus trails, campsite cooking, outdoor laser tag, field games, and they will take a field trip to a local park for kayaking, canoeing, and other lake activities.

Become a Superhero — with Drone Superpowers

McDonogh doesn’t just offer one Drone Camp — they offer Four Drone Camps for kids ages 7 to 17. During Superhero Drone camp, students will begin the week learning basic maneuvers before using their “Spidey-Sense” to conquer missions such as: Batman’s Drone-Mobile Escape, The Breakout of Iron Man, and more. Participants will storyboard their own escape missions while others attempt to outsmart them using the drone to locate and capture.

Windsurf on the Gunpowder

McDonogh has teamed with Ultimate Watersports to offer weeklong ultimate watersports adventures. All wet, all water, all the time!) Campers will try Stand-Up Paddle-boarding (SUP), Paddling Adventure Tours, Hobie Cat Sailing experiences, Windsurfing, Kayak Challenges, Water Trampolining, and Swimming, all while building team skills and learning about boating safety. All water sports equipment and daily round-trip transportation to Ultimate Watersports from McDonogh School are provided.
