Don’t worry if you saw the closed sign on the entry way to Play Café this week. They’ve just been closed for some cleaning and freshening — and reopen on Thursday, January 4th.
Some changes are in the works though for the Hampden coffee house, café and play space. Although the owners announced earlier this fall that they were seeking a buyer or new partner, co-owner Kathy Schott has decided to keep the business running on her own.
What changed her mind? Overwhelming customer support.
“I love it. I don’t want to see the restaurant close. If I can make some small changes to the business operation so it works for me and my family, I want to try,” said Kathy.
Small changes mean that the café will now operate from 9 AM – 3 PM daily, similar to other breakfast and lunch spots in the city.
Fewer hours doesn’t mean that the café is shifting into to ‘maintenance only mode.’ Kathy has some fun BIG changes in store as well! They’ll be launching some new menu items (hello, tv-tray-style-breakfast tray and new salads!) this weekend and adding more family-friendly events. Look for family game night events, children’s clothing swaps, and more story times popping up this winter and spring. They’ll continue to have Destination Doug every Wednesday at 10 AM and Aunt Whiz the first Friday every month, too.
“This is a lot for me to take on by myself,” said Kathy. But she’s confident that the community loves Play Café so much that they’ll continue to support it. And the café will continue to grow.
What happens if the right buyer or partner comes along? That’s still on the table, according to Kathy. But for now she’s up for the challenge.
“People really cared. We’re really a respite for parents with young kids. We’re part of the community,” said Kathy. “I’m really excited about this.”
And we are THRILLED that we have a place to enjoy a fabulous cuppa while the kiddos play! (Did we mention they’re a great place for birthday parties? We hear January is pretty booked up, but February has openings…)
