Hard to believe that we’re almost half-way through August and just a few short weeks away from the start of school. But it’s coming.

While we’re not encouraging you to race through the final weeks of summer, we do want to remind you that Maryland Tax Free Shopping Week starts on Sunday, August 13th and runs through Saturday, August 19th. Qualifying apparel and footwear under $100 per item is exempt from sales tax. New this year? The first $40 of a backpack purchase is sales tax exempt during this time, too.

We stopped by Wee Chic at Green Spring Station for some “sweet” advice on what to buy for fall. Here’s what they said…

As we mentioned above, backpacks are part of the Tax-Free Shopping Week incentive for the first time ever, although only the first $40 of your backpack purchase is exempt. What’s cool for 2017? Tie-dye, rainbow, faux fur, and sparkles. Wee Chic carries preschool and elementary-school sized packs.

The first few weeks of school are always warm, so stocking up on heavy sweaters might not be a great solution if you’re looking for new first-day threads. Graphic tees (both long sleeve and short sleeve) and leggings are always a great bet!

Who doesn’t love fuzzy shorts and a Girl Power tee? Perfect for sleepovers or throwing on after sports practice, rehearsal, or playtime to relax. Fully encourages ‘drop everything and read’ in our book! (Just as an FYI, bathrobes are also sales tax exempt during Tax-Free shopping week!)

Underwear, socks, tights… all tax-free! Perfect time to stock-up because, honestly, can you ever really have enough?

The almost-too-cool-for-school item for fall? The furry jacket. Fun for all ages and cozy enough for the bus stop. All jackets, coats, and raincoats are qualifying purchases.

Make that mental checklist of all the ‘dress up’ events you have this fall. (Cousin’s wedding, holidays, night at the theatre?) Make your purchases now, save on the tax, and skip the “OMG, YOU NEED AN OUTFIT!!” stress the night before. We’ll just call that a parenting win. Fun collar accessories are a great way to change the look for a simple tank dress. Dress down with boots or up with sparkly flats.

While headbands and sparkly purses aren’t sales tax exempt, they definitely make the outfit. Just saying…
