“I really wanted to promote children’s literacy and thought this would be a great way to do it,” said Josie Rhodes, Red Canoe Cafe and Children’s Bookstore co-owner.
What way? A (cool) new kids book club created in partnership with HL Sprouts and Omnibus Publishing! Interested kids register at Red Canoe and receive a special drawstring bag to carry their books. Participants then receive 10% off that month’s book selections and can visit the store for book bag club meetings once per month. A reading guide with discussion questions is included with every book purchase.
You won’t find a Magic School Bus or Disney selection as part of the club. Instead, book club selections reflect Josie’s own approach to buying kids’ books for the store: carefully curated, thoughtful and really (cool). This month’s selections include:
Hilda and the Stone Forest by Luke Pearson. Although Hilda is grounded, she’s heading off on another daring adventure in this graphic novel! The craziness ensues when her mother catches her and is dragged along for the ride. Written for kids ages 6-10.
Fortunately The Milk by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Skottie Young. It’s a best-selling story about time travel and breakfast cereal. (Need we say more?) Written for kids ages 8-12.
Membership is FREE! In the future, Josie hopes to the club turns reading into service learning, too. Club members will have an opportunity to read to seniors in assisted living facilities and more.
Building community. One book at a time.
Can’t wait to see what next month’s selections are…
