Football Sundays are a fall staple for so many of us, but with 16 game days in a season, your tailgate might need a little inspiration. So we asked the pros at Eddie’s of Roland Park and Becket Hitch to help us plan the perfect kid-friendly tailgate!
We know. The traditional tailgate takes place in a parking lot. But with littles — yeah. Who has time for that? We came up with a menu that works at home or at M&T, for little palates and big palates.
The best part? All of the food can be ordered ahead from Eddie’s — from the wings to the sliders (be sure to request the sliders assembled when you order and order at least 2 days ahead of time). Becket Hitch kept the styling simple and used all bounce proof dishes. Smart can be stylish.
PS – If you’re participating in our 30 Days of Gratitude challenge, today’s gratitude is football Sundays with your fav team and friends. All you have to do to participate in the challenge is post your tailgate selfies with the hashtag #coolgratitude.
(cool) kid-friendly tailgate party menu + food styling
Picnic favorites get a Ravens-style makeover on this menu. Purple slaw, Ravens Wings with Purple BBQ Sauce, Crab Pretzel, Deviled Eggs, quartered Quesadillas, Pork BBQ sliders with coleslaw, and crab dip. All are available from Eddie’s catering. Emphasis on easy-to-pick-up finger foods works for both little fingers and those trying to balance plates and drinks while socializing.
Falcon Bake Sets take the place of platters which help make all of the food more portable. Melamine dishes pull double duty as serving objects and snacking plates. Melamine cups work for utensils and veggie sticks. (Again, portability!)
Everything was arranged a “Touchdown” paper runner that can be cut to size depending on your serving table (or tailgate size).
(cool) kid-friendly tailgate bevvies
Wouldn’t be a tailgate without fun bevvies! Eddie’s came up with two Ravens-inspired drinks (a cocktail and a mocktail), but Ravens Beer also works well for adults. It might be literary not to Edgar Allen Poe rather than your favorite linebackers, but it still screams Baltimore. Serve in plastic cocktail cups that show your Maryland pride and can’t break if dropped. The designs are a Becket Hitch exclusive!
2 parts Dr. Brown’s black cherry soda
1 part 100% cranberry grape juice
Stir and serve over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge, if desired.
Blackberry Bourbon Smash
Yield: one cocktail
Three fresh blackberries
¼ lime, cut in half
2 oz. agave nectar
1½ oz. bourbon
1 can La Croix Muré Pepino blackberry cucumber sparkling water
Muddle the blackberries and lime in the bottom of a rocks glass, along with the agave nectar. Add bourbon and some ice, then fill to brim with sparkling water. Stir and enjoy.
(cool) kid-friendly tailgate activities
Wondering what to do with the kiddos during half-time? How about Tailgating with a Purpose! Contact the Jewish Volunteer Connection for a Tailgate with a Purpose Bag that contains materials/activities for an activity that gives back. Some of the activities that offered in their “tailgate bags” (and help guide the activity!) including supporting first responders, collecting school supplies, or making cards for people that could use support. Check back tomorrow for a fun idea to do at your next tailgate that will help ensure needy families get a warm meal.
