I have purposely tried to NOT over-schedule my children’s days this year. It’s my son’s first year of all-day education and I knew he would be worn out. And quite frankly, I don’t always enjoy driving two kids to different places every night of the week. But I realized one important thing over the holiday break: my children are stressed out.
Case in point? Getting out of the door in the morning. “Hurry up and eat. No you can’t wear a tank-top — it’s winter. Brush your teeth; longer, but hurry up! Where is your homework??WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE!” And I can only imagine what it does to their cute little brains.
But over our winter break, life was peaceful. We all got up when we wanted. We chilled out watching Christmas movies, we baked and assembled tons of legos. We ate our breakfast slowly and got to actually enjoy it! Our days were slow, unplanned, and happier.
As parents, much of our day is completely filled. We have work, school pickups, after school activities, the after after school activities. Oh wait, and dinner… what are we eating for dinner? So naturally, our stress can spill over to our children.
Yoga is one way my children can help manage their stress. I personally just spent 2015 grounding myself through breathing and building my self-confidence through challenging stretches,; why didn’t I think to try this with my children earlier? (Well, maybe because there wasn’t time…).
In the spirit of helping our kids ground themselves this year, here is a round-up of kids yoga classes in Baltimore to try. Hoping it brings your whole family a little namaste!
