When you think about getting away from the kiddos for a bit of grown-up time, ‘date night’ is almost inevitably what comes to mind. Dinner, drinks, convo… Dinner, drinks, convo with other couples… Dinner, drinks, convo…

{Can “dating’ your significant other get — eek! — monotonous after kids?}

Sure, any time you get a chance to chat with your significant other without slicing grapes into miniature pieces or sopping up spilled milk feels luxurious. But there can definitely be more to date night experience than a great meal sans kiddos.

Especially when it’s date day.

That’s right. A day date. Pat and I slipped away from our three mini-mes last Sunday morning – – albeit a bit bleary-eyed due to a late night cheerio and movie party with our toddler – – for a class at Painted Palette. A concoction of paint, canvases, champagne, gin, Maryland flags, crabs, and a few hours of adults-only chatting.

Truthfully, I was pleasantly surprised that Pat was up for the idea without any squeaks of protest. I had my doubts that my die-hard sports + history fanatic Chicagoan husband was going to be up for painting — much less painting a Maryland Flag with a giant blue crab on top. {Related, Santa may or may not have put a ‘trapped in Maryland’ keychain in his stocking last Christmas…}. But he put his game face on and — again, surprisingly — remarked that it was a relaxing, fun morning.(cool) dates: painted palette + mt. washington tavern - (cool) progeny

Maybe that was the post-painting gin and tonic at Mt. Washington Tavern talking? Or maybe he liked heckling me over whose flag lines were straighter (his). Did it matter? Nah.

I was also impressed that both of us turned out pretty decent paintings, thanks to the expert guidance of Painted Palette staff. Or the strategically-placed giant blue crab in the center of the design that was easy to create and hid all artistic sins. Either way, kudos to the Painted Palette team for making everyone feel like an artist! {Seriously, nothing would have been more of a date kill than leaving with paintings reminiscent of our  two-year-old’s finger …} There’s a reason they were named Baltimore’s best!

Our only dilemma? Where in the house do you hang not one — but two — blue crab paintings?
