Creative Alliance MOVE! Summer 2013 Dance Program - (cool) progeny

There is the old saying “we all smile in the same language.” But if you really want to fluent in universal languages, dance is the way to go. And the Creative Alliance is inviting all of Baltimore to explore dance culture through their new, innovative summer dance series.

Take a break from a traditional ballet class and introduce your pint-sizer to Latin and African dancing. Or make time for a brief respite for yourself and join Maria Broom for an adult dance medicine session. {You may remember Maria from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Music Box Series!}. For the youngest dancers, have them explore a variety of dance forms including modern and jazz through their Joy of Dance class. A great combo of getting exercise + cultural exploration.

Sessions run for six Saturdays, June 22nd through July 27th. All classes are $75 for Creative Alliance Members and $80 for non-members. There is a discount if you want to combine Latin and African dance classes, too! Here’s the class offering list:

Joy of Dance (ages 3-5)
In Joy of Dance young people ages 3-5 years explore several forms of dance including modern and jazz. Participants learn to follow directions and coordinate movements with partners. This program helps prepare students for more advanced levels of dance.

Dance Medicine for Adults with Maria Broom (adults)
Sway. Twirl. Shimmy. Shake your body. World beat. Latin. Reggae. Oldies. Hawaiian. Release the aches and worries, the tension and stress. That’s the ‘medicine’ in dancing. The heart beats faster. Emotions settle down. Your spirit can strengthen and heal itself. You look radiant and youthful. Each class begins with meditation… a quiet time to rest our bodies and forgive ourselves. The smell of Homa and sound of a crystal singing bowl encourages us to feel calm inside. Rested and relaxed, the body, mind and spirit are ready to dance!

Latin Dance for Kids (ages 6-12)
In Latin for Kids young people ages 6-12 explore several forms of traditional and contemporary Latin dance. Participants learn choreography and dancing techniques with partners. Instructions are given in both English and Spanish!

African Dance for Kids (ages 6-12)
In African Dance for Kids young people ages 6-12 explore several forms of traditional African dance. Participants learn choreography with live drumming!

Teen Choreography (ages 13+)
In Teen Choreography teens ages 12+ are encouraged to develop their own choreography. Guided by a young adult instructor, teens will enjoy fusing modern and hip hop dance techniques to self-selected music tracks.
