Baltimore Family Events - May 3-5, 2013

I think May just may be my favorite time of year. Windows and sliding screen doors open (reminder: shout at the kids a little quieter now…), dining al fresco, color popping up everywhere and all the fun outdoor events kicking off for the season. We’ve got preschool picnics and birthday parties on the agenda this weekend, but are hoping to hit up some of these super (cool) kid-friendly events for Baltimore families, too!

2013 FlowerMart
Spring 2013 in Baltimore means the 14th iteration of FlowerMart. On Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th, 2013, both days from 11AM – 8PM, flowers, fun and food will abound again in Mt. Vernon plaza around the Washington Monument. Over 100 vendors will sell their wares or display information about their causes to the public. A tremendous array of flowers, plants, accessories, arts and crafts, non-profit literature and wellness services will be available. In addition, we have arranged a colorful palette of varied entertainment for your enjoyment on two stages, including rock and roll and country bands, vocalists and several kinds of dancing, some with audience participation! Check out the Entertainment page for the schedule. On Saturday, the West Park will host a special Children’s Camp from noon to 5PM. Kids will be able to make origami animals, Mother’s Day cards and more, plus the Urban Pirates will hold storytime. MORE INFORMATION

Bryn Mawr Community Bazaar

15th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race
A race of wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art designed to travel on land, through mud, and over deep harbor waters this Saturday! What are they made out of? Used bicycles, gears, and parts, created by a lunatic genius who tinkers around in the garage or backyard (do you know this person?)! The machines can be simple, small crafts, piloted by only one brave soul, or they can be over 50 feet long, extremely well-engineered, sophisticated vehicles powered by a team of pilots. Pilots (“Kinetinauts”) compete for the most coveted award and more. Race starts at 10am at the American Visionary Art Museum (arrive early to take part in Opening Ceremony and Blessing of De Feet!). Other great spots to see the vehicles are the 1st checkpoint atop Federal Hill; the water entry at the Korean War Memorial Park in Canton; the uphill mud-pit in Patterson Park; the not-so-quick-sand pit in Patterson Park; and, of course, anywhere along the 15-mile route through Baltimore.
