Baltimore families have a lot of options when it comes to getting out of the house this weekend {who says the cold needs to keep you in?!?}. Chinese New Year celebrations for kids are kicking off, Disney on Ice is in town, a GREAT nature song show for kids comes to the Creative Alliance, plus two exciting ways to capture the love just in time for Valentine’s Day. Disney on Ice presents Treasure Trove
Disney On Ice sets the gold standard with its newest skating spectacular, now at 1st Mariner Arena. Family Sweetheart Dances at Your Local Y
The Y of Central Maryland is celebrating Valentine’s Day with Family Sweetheart Dances on Friday, February 8, at eight participating Family Center Y locations. Participants will dance the night away with mom, dad or any other special person. Space is limited, so please register in advance and don’t miss this opportunity to join the Y for fun on the dance floor! Uncle Remus Stories at Chesapeake Children’s Museum
As was the custom of the times, an honored “Uncle” retells the folktales spun on Georgia plantations in the 1800’s. Children (and former children) will be entertained by the lessons to be learned from Brer Rabbit and his associates. Crafts and other activities will follow. Recommended for ages four and up. Discovery Days with Elaine Bachmann at Robinson Nature Center
Discovery Days introduce your child to the wonders of nature through stories, games or craft activities. This winter, each Discovery Days program features a local children’s author or illustrator whose work reveals the stories of our environment — and this weekend it’s While a Tree Grew, The Story of Maryland’s Wye Oak by Elaine Bachmann. Saturday’s program will include excerpts from book and a fun activity or craft associated with the book’s theme. Books are available for sale in the nature center’s gift shop and authors are available to sign their books after each program. Preregister to secure your spot. Twist Photography Valentine’s Day MiniShoot
Join Twist Photography for a SWEET deal! On Saturday, February 9th from 10:45 PM – 1 PM, they’re hosting Valentine’s Day Mini-Shoots at The Best of Luck Candy Store (located in Power Plant). For $99, each family will receive a mini photo-shoot in the sweetest of all candy stores, one sweet treat from the candy store for their photo shoot, and 20 valentine’s day cards (additional cards available). Oral Traditions: African American Folktales at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum
Enjoy African American folktales with storyteller “Janice the Griot.” In this interactive, music filled workshop, Janice the Griot shares popular animal folklores taught in the African American community that incorporates cultural values. Carnival of Animals with Bob Brown Puppets
Join the Annapolis Symphony for a family-friendly concert that features the humorous zoological tale of Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals ” brought to life with puppetry by Bob Brown Puppets. Bob Brown Puppets have been a major children’s theater company for over fifty years. They created this production to perform with symphonies. The charming, oversized puppets, props and scenery, all enhanced by special lighting effects, provide a spectacular visual interpretation of Saint-Saëns’ most enduring and endearing work. This concert will also feature a slideshow presentation of children’s and local artists’ Spring images to accompany Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.” Recommended for ages 4 and up. Billy B Natural Science Songs
The “Natural Science Song and Dance Man” Billy B rocks out with electric guitar and amazing showmanship. Billy B performs over 300 shows a year around the country and partners with National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and the World Wildlife Fund. Families have a blast learning (real!) science. Chinese New Year at the Walters
Good luck and fortune begin at The Walters Art Museum! Chinese New Year 2013 is the year of the Snake. Those born under the sign of the Snake are wise, intelligent, and intuitive-celebrate with them! Performances and Tours include: Year of the Snake Attributes (good fortune, wisdom, charm) as seen in works of art, Baltimore Chinese School Performance, Johns Hopkins University Lion Dance Troupe, and Baltimore Chinese School Performance.
