After 20 years in the fashion industry, one of my favorite perks may surprise you.  It’s a simple pleasure that makes the dreary seasonal-affect-disorder-inducing month of  January a warm, sunny place. Let me explain. January marks the arrival of the spring lines. As buyers, we first saw them last August and have since forgotten their details but as we open our shipping boxes mid-month. The result is akin to hours of UV therapy.

Spring 2013 is no exception. The spring 2013 runways were a collision of strong primary colors and softer, feminine treatments.  The colors swing from poppy red and Monaco blue to pastels like linen and grayed jade. This is a season where color itself is the best trend to follow. spring2013trends-colorsSo here I am to share some of our sunniness with you…. A look towards warmer days and cheery shades.  It doesn’t matter if you buy Tory Burch, Target or all points in between. It will be fun to dress yourself and your mini-me in Spring 2013. Enjoy!

Lovely Lace
Enter the pastels and clean whites with the ever-feminine look of lace. Momma can expect chunky lace and mixed textures like Tory Burch, as well as the sugar sweet lace pieces like designer Stacey Bendet gives us here from Alice & Olivia. Little Miss gets sturdy eyelet and chunky lace from favs Mayoral & Llum. Sorry boys… this trend is no boys allowed.

Moody Blues
Miss Wu, the newest project from designer Jason Wu, hit Nordstrom shelves this month in an exclusive release.  Alongside Tory Burch, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and  Iceberg, Miss Wu featured groupings of deep blue and navy in prints, color blocks and stripes. This trend was seen on both the men’s and women’s runways and shows up in both boys and girls in the world of kids fashion. Mayoral embraced watery florals, while Tea Collection went clean and simple. Toobydoo shows it’s classic sensibility with color block in blue hue. EGG Baby is  sweet with ruffles.

Sunny Days
Watercolor blues are a terrific transition to sunny yellow and orange. Pantone called these spring 2012 colors lemon zest and nectarine; we call  them HAPPINESS. In men’s favs Bespoken, Jil Sander and Iceberg,  you see classic looks with splashes of bold color. On the women’s side, suiting gets a facelift in brilliant yellow from Alice & Olivia  and Michael Kors. This palette for kids is so much fun. Our favorites come from Tea Collection, Egg Baby and Llum. If this doesn’t make you feel like Spring is right around the corner, nothing will.

Going Native
Milly, Tory Burch & J Crew moved on from last season’s batiks, showing tailored medallion prints and earthy textures for a more polished take on worldly influence. In children’s, Tea Collection pulled it’s Spring 2013 concept direct from South African culture using authentic textiles and handwork as their guide. Mayoral employed medallion prints and embroidery with faux leather embellishments to encourage us to think it’s time to break out the sandals…. {Is it time, yet?}

All Hail
Poppy red made a statement in many spring 2013 shows. Polished and professional at Michael Kors, whimsical and sweet at Alice & Olivia, architectural at DvF, and just plain badass at Betsey Johnson. No matter your style point of view, there is a red in spring 2013 that you are sure to love. Kids get the same spectrum as Llum and Tea Collection offer up sweet red prints for the girly girl. Mayoral designers and the Euro-preppy master behind Toobydoo go Americana with navy and white combinations for boy and girl. Just remember this trend can be a mess in the wash. Unless you want the whole family wearing varying shades of pink all spring, be sure to wash separately.
