The Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs

On Saturday, September 29, 2012, GBMC Foundation will host Shawan Downs’ signature event, The Legacy Chase, to benefit Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Now in its 12th year, this annual tradition draws in more than 7,000 equestrian fans and families from throughout the region. Over the past 11 years, The Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs has generated considerable financial support for GBMC’s Nursing, Emergency and Pediatric Emergency Departments.

Stretched across 300 acres of green meadows at Shawan Downs in Northern Baltimore County, The Legacy Chase attracts visitors of all ages who turn out each year for the steeplechase races, railside tailgating, live music, great food, and family-friendly activities. While many of the crowd-pleasing traditions will continue this year—such as the G. Leslie Grimes Memorial Stick Pony Race for kids—GBMC has added some exciting new components to help make this year’s event a success:

“Chase on the Hill” Wine Tasting, featuring Jim Gabler

GBMC will host a “Chase on the Hill” wine tasting lecture and luncheon at The Legacy Chase from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., which will feature renowned wine expert Jim Gabler. Tickets for this exclusive event are $125 per person for the Standard Tasting, or $250 per person for the Reserve Tasting, and covers lunch and the entrance fee for the day. Gabler has dedicated more than 30 years of his life to understanding fine wine, has visited most of the world’s vineyards and has met hundreds of winemakers. He is a recognized wine historian, a frequent lecturer and has authored five books including Passions: The Wines and Travels of Thomas Jefferson, winner of the prestigious Veuve Clicquot Wine Book of the Year award.

Opening Ceremonies

The 2012 Legacy Chase event will kick off the day’s festivities with a parade of historical horse-drawn carriages around the steeplechase course. The opening ceremonies will also feature a live performance of the National Anthem by an opera singer from The Lyric in Baltimore.

Live Music from GAZZE

The Legacy Chase will feature Baltimore-based band GAZZE from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more than 30 years, GAZZE has provided an exciting style of musical entertainment designed to keep audiences on their feet for the entire performance. This nine-member band features two dynamic lead vocalists, a three-piece horn section and a lively four-piece rhythm section. From today’s top hits to ’50s classics, country, big band or swing, GAZZE performs each song with an energy level that is second to none.
