International Observe the Moon Night at Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Md. will host a public event on Sept. 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT to celebrate the inspirational power of the moon. This free event is for families with middle school aged children and older.

This year’s International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) event is dedicated to astronaut Neil Armstrong. To honor the wishes of the Armstrong family, the attendees will be encouraged to wink at the moon. Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, passed away on Aug. 25.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to honor the legacy of Neil Armstrong through InOMN by encouraging all of our participants to simultaneously wink at the Moon,” said Brooke Hsu, director of International Observe the Moon Night, at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “We will be asking InOMN hosts around the world to do the same.”

This year’s InOMN event will feature:

• Hands-on activities
• Facility tours
• Talks with scientists and engineers
• Telescope viewing
• And more!

The International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) provides an opportunity for people to take notice of the moon and its splendor.

The InOMN team consists of a number of science and education enthusiasts from the United States and around the world. The team stays abreast of current lunar scientific discoveries and brings them to the public’s attention.

No reservations are needed to attend this event, so bring the entire family. The visitor center is located on IceSat Road in Greenbelt, Md. Parking is available on a first come, first served basis.
