One of our favorite series of children’s books is the Happy Dog Adventure series written by local author Michael Muller — so we were thrilled when we heard there is going to be a FIFITH book about Mirabelle! This time, she’s not chasing a ball or going for a walk. She’s making a new friend.
Chronicling the adventures of a charismatic Boston Terrier and her owner, Mr. Muller, the Happy Dog adventure series is a modern board book series that combines storytelling with whimsical collage art.
“As I always tell people, I give Mirabelle all the credit for the books,” said Michael in an interview with us in 2013. “I use to make handmade books for the kids at Stone Robinson Elementary School where I worked for 14 years. I loved seeing the kids connect to the images I collaged in the books I made for them. It made me dream of one day becoming an author.”
The new Mirabelle adventure – Mirabelle Makes a Friend – was inspired by Amelia, Michael’s actual rescue dog, coming to live with them. Amelia is now a “spunky and much-loved” addition to the family. The book is slated to be published in fall 2017.
To bring the fifth book to fruition, Michael and his business partner Tom, crowdfunded. In less than a week, they met their goal — and are still going so they can print even more books. Rather than use a crowd-funding site, they are using their ecommerce platform to raise funds and reporting progress through Facebook. This way, they aren’t incurring additional fees and can pass savings onto their readers.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Mirabelle for the holidays in Charm City!
