It’s back! Baltimore’s favorite foodie weekend — The Emporiyum!

What is The Emporiyum? A two-day market featuring artisanal foods and drinks from Baltimore and beyond. This spring, the market coincides with Light City. It will take place on April 1st and 2nd at the former Best Buy space in the Inner Harbor.

We chatted with co-founder Sue-Jean Chun (a Baltimore mom!) about her favorite ways to navigate the festival with kids in tow.

(cool) tips for a successful family food adventure at the emporiyum

Buy the VIP Tickets

$40 per ticket might seem like a bit of a splurge — but the value is priceless. Explore the market with fewer crowds at a kid-friendly hour from 10 AM – 11 AM. Get a VIP bag of gourmet goodies and complimentary brunch bites. Remember, kids 12 and under are free; so those with littles will just need passes for the adults in their life!

Buy Your Tickets in Advance

The Emporiyum frequently sells out — so be sure to purchase tickets in advance. Early general admission tickets are $20 (admission at 11 AM), General admission tickets are $15 (admission at 1:30 PM), and VIP tickets are $40 (admission at 10 AM). Want to save a little? Use code COOLPROGENY for a 15% discount when you buy your tickets! (Don’t forget — kids under 12 are free).

Set-Up a Base

Arrive early and set-up a base at one the festivals handy tables. “My husband usually camps out and I bring the food to the table for our family to enjoy,” said Sue-Jean. Brilliant.

Have a Game Plan

All of the Emporiyum artisans, makers, and shakers are listed on the website. Take a little time before you go and make a short list of ones you definitely want to visit. We all know kids have short attention spans; so having a game plan will make sure you don’t leave disappointed if your toddler has a meltdown after an hour.

Hit the Kid-Friendly Vendors

Sure, there are palate pleasers for the sophisticated foodies in your life (hello, Bloody Mary’s topped with fully stuffed bagels from Buffalo & Bergen, Ceremony Coffee, and Huckles Hot Sauce), but there are plenty of vendors that will delight kids! Three words: Unicorn Parade Milkshakes. (Do we really need to say more?)

Actually, we do need to say more. Other don’t miss kid-pleasing stops include Little Miss Whoopie, Prescription Chicken Soup, Cream Cruiser, and Laboan Dumplings.

Talk to the Vendors About Allergies

Every vendor is an expert in their food category and can help families navigate dietary and allergy restrictions. Please be sure to state allergy or dietary restriction upon meeting  vendors in order to avoid any issues. There are a few vendors serving dedicated gluten-free and vegan- friendly items.
