Ladies and gentlemen fire up your grills for the unofficial start of summer! Kicking off the season of sun and fun with a long weekend is sort of brilliant, don’t ya think? While we’re super excited about the long weekend and summer’s imminent arrival, we also like to be sure to keep in mind the reason for the holiday. Here are a couple of events in the area that help keep the memory in Memorial Day.

Memorial Day @ Fort McHenry
May 30 | 9 AM – 4 PM

Did you know that the first parks and public lands were cemeteries? Loudon Park National Cemetery was one of the first 14 National Cemeteries in the U.S. designated in 1862 during the Civil War. Join the NPS staff there for a special ceremony with veterans from WWII, Korea and Vietnam this Memorial Day. Members of the 29TH Division Association the “Blue and Gray” Division make this observance memorable. MORE

Memorial Day @ Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens
May 30 | 10 AM – 11 AM

Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens honors those who fell in service of their country in their traditional Memorial Day ceremony. This year’s ceremony features Army National Guard Captain Christian as Keynote Speaker and music from the 229th Army Band, Maryland Army National Guard, Maryland Sings, and Bill Myers, director of the Edenwald Glee Club. Annapolis Memorial Day Parade 
May 30 | 10 AM – 11 AM

The parade follows the traditional route on West Street, goes around Church Circle, down Main Street, and ends at City Dock. Marching bands, as well as veteran, community, and patriotic organizations will be part of the parade honoring and remembering those who have died serving our country. MORE

Sungazing @ The Science Center
May 28 | 1 PM – 4 PM

What’s 1.4 million kilometers (869,919 miles) wide and necessary for an awesome summer? The sun! Take a closer look at the Sun {yes, the sun!} at the Science Center observatory. Safely look at the Sun and its features—such as sunspots and prominences—through a special set of filters on their telescope. MORE

Asian Pacific Heritage Celebration @ Port Discovery
May 28 | 10 AM – 5 PM

Join Port Discovery for a celebration of the traditions and culture of Asian Pacific heritage with performances and more! Enjoy a presentation from the Kawasaki Sister City Committee, art from the far east, Japanese folk tales, and a performance from New Moon Theater.  MORE

Brew at The Zoo
May 28 & 29 | 1 PM – 7 PM

Brews and bears… oh my! Brew at The Zoo is the most important fundraiser of the year to support The Maryland Zoo. Experience one of Baltimore’s biggest beer festivals this Memorial Day weekend, May 28th & May 29th. Enjoy good times with the animals featuring unlimited beer sampling, live music, local artisan vendors and, of course, all day admission to the Zoo. MORE

Kids Edible Plant Walk
May 29 | 11 AM – 1 PM

Join Charm City Farms for walks that teaches kids how to identify edible, medicinal, and useful wild plants and fungi in-the-field in Baltimore city and county. The kids walk is for ages 7-14 and the child must be accompanied by an adult, however the chaperoning adult is asked to stay on the periphery for the duration of the walk. MORE

Baltimore Farmers Market & Bazaar 
May 29 | 7 AM – 12 PM

Mmmm, mushrooms. In my book there is no better start to a Sunday morning than an omelette stuffed to bursting with a cornucopia of mushrooms from my favorite stall at the market. For that alone I’ll get up early and head to this market. Okay, the mini donuts too. Grabbing some fresh greens and vibrant (locally grown) veg for a huge dinner salad is the way to balance it all out. While this is our go-to Farmers Market we’re looking forward to checking out those featured in the (cool) Summer Adventure guide.  MORE

Shadow Play @ The Shed 
May 28 -30 | 11 AM – 4 PM

Shadow Play is a fun and inventive way for kids to explore the art of casting shadows at the Science Center’s hands-on exploration station, The Shed. Part workshop, part laboratory, The Shed hosts different events and programs throughout the year as well as drop in activities each day. MORE

Sowebo Arts & Music Festival 
May 29 | 12 PM – 8 PM

In its 32nd year the Sowebo Festival is Baltimore’s utterly unique Arts and Music Festival in historic Hollins Market. The festival features live music, face painting, and hands-on arts for the whole family. The Festival’s salon style art show invites any artist to show for the day to 1000’s of art starved people.Stroll along an soak in the art. It’s a great way to kick off Memorial Weekend. MORE
