Ok, let’s start by agreeing to collectively pretend it did not snow 8 inches on St Patrick’s Day and that it hasn’t been 40 degrees for what feels like decades. That’s better isn’t it? Let’s just move ahead — imagining it is actually Spring and there is a warm breeze blowing, birds singing, and flowers blooming. (Hello, spring?) I think my fantasy life might need some work because that was pretty thrilling.

Anyone that has stood on the sidelines of “Spring” sports practice in the blowing wind this month (48 degrees my foot) will attest to the fact that this weather is taking a lot of the fun out of Springtime. It’s stolen some of the best moments right out from under us but it doesn’t have to take the joy out of buying those first pieces of bright and fun warm weather duds for the kiddos. The name of the game for Spring 14’ is transition (a fancy industry term for layering).

layer over: raid those lost closets and storage bins

Vests and light jackets from last fall get a second life in these chilly temps. If you are lucky they still fit and you can get more WP$ (wears per $) out of them. So pull them out and put them front and center so they are ready to grab as weather permits.

Too short? No worries, cropped styles are in for 2014. Just layer with a longer tee but be sure not to go any shorter than the waistband of pants for boys.

layer under: let yourself shop

Don’t let the weather keep you from grabbing up your fav new looks. Pick up some fun new color or print from Spring 14’ and layer it with winter long sleeves. New graphic tees look terrific with a contrast sleeve and dresses can have two lives with a simple layer underneath. Love mixing stripes and prints like these Tea Collection looks for all ages.

Layering over can be great too plus it makes adjusting to the temps throughout the day easier for your child.  Roxy, Tea Collection, and Mayoral show us how to layer up with these fun combos. Adding just a few new, bright pieces will go a long way to helping with that Seasonal Affect Disorder and you’ll get lots of life out of your new threads. Don’t be afraid to buy a bit bigger. That will leave some room for layers and get you great WP$ through early Fall.

the transition jacket: stylish functional statement piece

Invest in a few “transition” favs like a classic denim jacket or a trendier piece like this season’s camo prints. Dress up for Spring holidays with updated trench looks that do double duty as a casual jacket (all jackets by Mayoral). Go for bold color for your little man  like this Appaman windbreaker.
