One of the activities we set up for the Bug’s birthday party was a noodle necklace station. Not the boring plain jane beige variety. Bright, colorful noodle necklaces (it was a rainbow party, after all). It’s definitely a kid-pleaser and easy on the budget, too. You probably have most of the materials lying around the house. Takes  a little bit of effort on the preparation end so consider dying the noodles one day and making necklaces the next.

Here’s what you need:

  • Variety of noodles (different shapes and sizes, but all should be ‘threadable’)
  • Food coloring
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Plastic bags or containers
  • Baking Sheets
  • Ribbon

How to make the necklace:

Step One: Decide how many colors you would like to have. Since the party was rainbow-theme, we followed ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). I put a variety of noodles into seven ziploc bags.

Step Two: Fill each bag with enough rubbing alcohol to cover and coat the noodles (about 1/2-3/4 cup).  (Note: you can use less rubbing alcohol, but the color isn’t as vibrant). Add food coloring and shake till the noodles are covered. Let the pasta sit for 3-4 hours. If you have more time, you may want to let it sit longer!

Step Three: Take the pasta out of the bag and let it dry on baking sheets. Best to do this overnight so little fingers aren’t tempted to ‘test’ them. Nothing like food coloring finger prints on the wall…  If the humidity is low, let them dry outside because there will be a bit of a stench. But if it’s hazy like a typical Maryland summer day/night, keep them in a well-ventilated place inside to dry. Soggy noodles make terrible necklaces. Be sure to remind the kiddos this is decorating pasta, not eating pasta. Who knows what rubbing alcohol does to the stomach, but I imagine it’s nothing good.

Step Four: Place your dried, colored noodles in bowls for threading! Cut string for the necklaces and either make a knot on one end of the string, or use a wagon-wheel shaped noodle and tie the string around it as an anchor.

Step Five: Let the kiddos string away! {This might make fun Christmas Tree garland, too… file that away for the holidays.}

Voila! There you have it folks. Fun, colorful noodle necklaces. Perfect summer keep-them-busy activity.
