belly chronicles: decaf coffee, it’s really for placebo effect

coffee cup

I’m a coffee drinker. It’s a little habit I picked up while studying/living in Italy during college. While the coffee in the States is not quite the same as grabbing an espresso on the piazza, I’ve learned to appreciate it.

Of course, being pregnant puts a little wrench into the caffeine consumption. Yes, I know a cup a day is ok. My OB has assured me I won’t do permanent damage if I need a little jolt. But kids — even yet-to-be-born kids — have a way of piling on the mom guilt. So I’ve been limiting my high octane consumption to a sporadic cuppa.

That said, I have this crazy habit of wanting a cup of coffee in the morning. I think it’s more to do with the aroma than the actual coffee. Watching all of those Folgers commercials growing up must have made an impression… (…the best part of waking up!)

Enter decaf. Some mornings, it feels like I’ve actually got a little more pep because of that cup.

Yes, I know. It’s just placebo effect.

I’m ok with that.

I am, however, having trouble finding a decaf coffee I really like. Truthfully, I’m having trouble finding anything that tastes good to drink right now because even water has that oh-so-fab metalic pregnancy taste. Artifact Coffee makes a great decaf latte (and the barista laughed at my “I know this is sacreligious, but do you have a decaf espressso? Don’t want to amp up the baby” quip. That scores them extra points).  But I’m having trouble finding a Keurig-friendly solution.

Any suggestions?

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

We have the Green Mountain decaf in our keurig at work and it's decent, but I also know Dunkin Donuts makes decaf K-cups. You can get them in store, and probably online.

Whole Foods has an organic decaf coffee that's good. It's a pain, but you can get one of those reusable k-cups on Amazon and use it with that. I did not find a decaf k-cup coffee that I loved while pregnant, but the Green Mountain decaf breakfast blend was not bad.
