kid-friendly dining: andy nelson’s barbeque

Andy Nelson's BBQ

It’s no secret that I’ve had very few cravings this pregnancy, but last Saturday night I was dying for pulled pork barbecue (I know, odd). So Pat, the Bug and I headed to Andy Nelson’s Barbecue on York Road.

Yes — it is the restaurant of that Andy Nelson. The one famous for all those championship years with the Baltimore Colts.

What looks a bit like a road-side stand is actually quite a sophisticated set-up — with tons of seating and even a drive through. It has all the charm of a dive with the service of your favorite southern diner. Their outside seating area is fantastic for families: picnic style complete with twinkle lights. A mix of 70s rock, top 40 and blues plays on the stereo. Great ambiance because you don’t have to worry about ‘sushing” your kids in fear of  interrupting guests at the neighboring table. Your kid can even get up and dance in the aisles without annoying other patrons. We may or may not know this from experience…

There are two kids’ meal choices on Andy Nelson’s menu: small pulled pork sandwich (size of a slider) or mac ‘n cheese. Each kids’ meal comes with a drink and two oreo cookies. The Bug said she was in the mood for meat (to the shock of her parents, who assumed she would order mac ‘n cheese), so she got a slider. I ordered a side of mac ‘n cheese with my pulled pork as a ‘back-up’ in case the Bug’s choice backfired.

It didn’t. She devoured it.

The adult sandwich platters come with your choice of two sides. As I mentioned before, I got the mac ‘n cheese for the Bug and coleslaw (I honestly only needed one side — the sandwich was uber filling!). Pat had collard greens and redskin potato salad with his pulled pork. Zero complaints. Food was delicious.

On Saturday nights, you can even score an Ice Cream Sundae with locally-made ice cream from Prigel Family Creamery. Love when local businesses support one another!

I have a feeling we’ll be back to Andy Nelson’s…Soon.

{PS: They do catering!!}

Hours: M-T: 10 am -8 pm; Fri-Sat:  10 am – 9 pm; Closed Sunday
11007 York Road , Cockeysville, MD 21030

GETTING THERE: Andy Nelson’s is right on York Road in Hunt Valley.  Tons of parking available, but pay attention to signs. Entrances and exits are one-way.

COST: Dinner for three? $25. That’s two adult meals and a kids’ meal.

FAMILY ACCESSIBILITY: Super family accessible! Your stroller will definitely roll up the ramp to the inside of the restaurant and is no problem to cruise through outside seating.

KEEP THEM HAPPY: Food is delivered quickly, which is great for tiny grumbling stomachs. The Bug loved watching the lights and dancing. The restaurant — which is seat-yourself-style- – did not provide crayons or coloring sheets. So it would be good to bring a busy bag or activity. We had the iPad ‘on call.’

When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.
