what’s up for the weekend: july 27-29

Lots of fun things happening in and around Charm City this weekend {and it’s only going to be in the low 90s this weekend, so a bit of a heat break. A bit…}. Here are our picks for top family fun!

Waterfront Partnership’s 3rd Summer Social at West Shore Park
Tonight! Live music by the Beach Bumz, Food Trucks, Beer, Wine & Margarita Garden, Waterfront Kids Play Area, Arts & Crafts, Balloon Animals, Face Painting & Discounted Parking. Sweet. Remember to bring bathing suits and towels to cool off in the Walter Sondheim Fountain.

Make a Music CD
Become a MUSIC producer for a day! Work with professional music producer Kariz Marcel to write lyrics and create beats to be included in your very own CD. Your friends will be impressed! No experience is necessary. Discover how computer software is used to combine different music forms in one finished CD. Completed CDs will be ready for pick-up the following week (Aug 4). The jam session happens on Saturday from 3 PM – 5 PM at the Creative Alliance.

Summer of Irresponsible Science at the Maryland Science Center
Free with paid admission! Bigger bangs. More contraptions. Splashier splats. It’s The Summer of Even More Irresponsible Science and it runsMemorial Day to Labor Day. Like last summer but even better, come watch expert scientists blow things up, create crazy chemistry, drop stuff off the roof, build things and destroy them and all the other things they always tell you not to try at home. Inside and out, bottom to top, all around the Science Center, come join the fun as we get into to some squishy, gushing, exploding summertime fun.

Tot Swap Children’s Consignment Sale
Held multiple times a year at four locations around the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area, TotSwap is Maryland’s premier series of consignment sales and offers a savvy way for local families to buy and sell numerous high-quality baby, kids, teen and maternity items. Held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds all weekend. Check their website for times.

Milburn Orchards Blackberry Bash
Join Milburn Orchards for Home-made and Hand-cranked Ice Cream making demonstrations, Orchard Wagon Rides, Pie eating contests for kids, face painting and so much more! $3 per person. 11 AM – 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Ecology Explorations: Many Legged Beasties
Saturday from 11 AM – 12 noon at the Maryland Zoo. Although not featured in Zoo exhibits (except occasionally as food!), invertebrates like insects and spiders can be found in natural areas throughout the Zoo grounds.  Come explore these areas and learn more about Maryland’s native arthropods. This program is free with Zoo admission, but requires pre-registration. To pre-register, contact the education department at 443.552.5300.

Explore Mars at the Goddard Visitors Center
This Saturday from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM! just nine days before the Mars rover Curiosity touches down on the Red Planet, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s Visitor Center will host a free exploration event. This is your chance to interact with the scientists and engineers working on the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM), the Goddard-built instrument suite onboard the rover Curiosity. See yourself on Mars with the Goddard photo booth and immerse yourself in a 3D Mars image gallery. Experience a full-scale inflatable Curiosity rover, a full-scale rover wheel, and examples of rocks like ones NASA might find on Mars.

Guarding the Railroad at the B&O Railroad Museum
In this program designed for children ages 6-12, learn the importance of the B&O Railroad during the early days of the Civil War. See pictures of the Thomas Viaduct that was the only link by rail to Washington, D.C. Children will be allowed to try on the uniform and equipment that a soldier would have used on a day to day basis. They will be able to touch and see personal equipment, leather gear, haversack, and canteens. Feel the history come alive while exploring pieces of American history. Takes place at noon on Saturday.

Super Sunday at the Baltimore Museum of Industry
Beat the heat and come watch vintage cartoons and a movie with free popcorn. Included with museum admission. Movies happen at 11:00 AM and 1 :00 PM.

Baltimore Summer Restaurant Week
Ok, we’ve got mixed opinions on whether or not Restaurant Week is really family friendly. It is, however, date night friendly. Book your kids’ favorite sitter and head out to try a new culinary gem with your spouse.

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
