make it: kaleidoscope luminaries

One of the best things about summertime? Late night porch chats (preferably with a glass of vino in hand). I had seen this tissue paper luminary idea over on Pinterest when searching for 4th of July-inspired decorating ideas. But rather than make something we could just enjoy for a short period of time, I thought why not make something we can enjoy all summer long?

Hence the colorful kaleidoscope idea. A great post-backyard baby pool swim activity.

Here’s what you need:

  1. Mason Jars
  2. Colorful Tissue Paper, cut into squares or any shape really
  3. Mod Podge
  4. Foam Paint Brushes

Kaleidoscope Luminaries Materials
Step One:
Using a foam brush, coat the inside of the mason jar with Mod Podge.

Kaleidoscope Luminaries Step One

Step Two:
Gently cover the Mod Podge with tissue paper squares/shapes. You may need to use your brush (with a little mod podge on it) to smooth out seems. No need to make a pattern — go crazy! The more overlaps and fun shapes created, the more interesting your luminary will be. {Your pint sizer will probably need help smoothing out the bubbles/crinkles} Try and cover all areas of the glass.

Kaliedoscope Luminaries Step Two

Step Three:
Let it dry! If your kiddos are Mod Podge ‘heavy painters’ like those helping us with this craft, drying may take a LONG TIME.

Kaleidoscope Luminaries Step Three

Step Four:
Find a tealight candle and place it in the middle of your luminary. Light it up and watch the colors glow!

Enjoy!

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.
