it’s raining! 10 things to do with kids around baltimore

It’s raining. It’s pouring. And there are only so many art projects…

The weatherman is calling for lots of the wet stuff this week. So here are 10 ideas to keep ‘em busy instead of driving you bananas.

Duckpin Bowling at Patterson Lanes: After 1:00 PM Monday thru Saturday (2:00 PM on Sundays), Patterson Lanes opens for Open Play! That means everyone can get in on the duckpin action. Because balls are just 2-3lb, they are perfect for pint-sizers. ($12 for one hour of play per person, includes shoes).

Storyville: Take a trip to one of their two FREE locations for hours of ‘lets pretend’ adventure. Opens Monday thru Saturday at 9:00 AM, and 1:00 PM on Sunday. Perfect for ages 0-5. (FREE!)

Go on an art hunt at The Walters Art Museum: Each of the exhibits at the Walters has storybooks that you can read the kiddos while you’re exploring art. Don’t miss the kid-friendly section downstairs. We’re huge fans of the dress-ups! Open Wednesday thru Sunday, 10 AM – 5:00 PM. (FREE!)

Go for a Rain Walk at Irvine Nature Center: Who says you can’t play in the rain? If it’s not pouring, strap on the rainboots and go for an adventure on one of Irvine Nature Center’s trails. Then, if you’re a member, stop in their natural play space and make mud pies. Open every day, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. (FREE!)

Have an encounter at the National Aquarium: There are more than 40 animal/researcher encounters happening daily at the National Aquarium. And their new all inclusive ticket lets you hang out with the dolphins all day long. (Children ages 3-11: $20.95; Adults: $29.95)

Get a dose of natural beauty at the Conservatory: It’s raining, it’s pouring… but you can still take a stroll and smell the flowers. Pack up the kiddos and head to the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory and Garden. Open Wednesday thru Sunday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. (FREE! But a $5 donation per person is encouraged).

Climb the indoor treehouse at Port Discovery: Get the wiggles out and head to Port Discovery to climb their indoor tree house… and catch all of the kid-friendly action in one of the country’s best children’s museums. ($13.95 for everyone ages 2 and up)

Get a new book at The Book Thing: Donate your old books for a new gently-loved one! Kids will love picking through the collection for a new treasure. Open 9 AM – 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Play at Charm City Kids Club: Drop in to try out one of their super fun classes (be sure to call and see if there is space) or just play in play town! CCKC is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm, and 10 am – 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday. ($8 per child)

Dig for Dinosaur Bones at The Maryland Science Center: One of our fav exhibits at the Maryland Science Center is also a permanent one: Dinosaur Mysteries! Over a dozen full size dinosaurs roam Edward St. John Hall—home to Dinosaur Mysteries. Walk under, over, and through a landscape filled with dig pits, a field lab, excavation sites, and other areas of discovery. Open Monday – Friday from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM and Sunday 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.($11.95 for children 3-12, $14.95 for adults).

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
