what’s up for the weekend: may 4th-6th

It’s the unofficial start of warm weather weekends! The first weekend in May marks the beginning of outdoor festivals, fetes and family fun. Of course, we hope you join us at our first Field Day with Waterfront Partnership at West Shore Park! But if old school relays, yoga in the park and bubble bonanzas aren’t your thing, there are lots of other ways to keep the pint sizers entertained this weekend. For a full listing, check out our calendar.

Family Field Day Fun
Bring your own picnic lunch and join us to kick off summer season old-school style! Waterfront Partnership and (cool) progeny are excited to partner to bring Charm City Families a day of playdate fun.Enjoy relay races, Yoga Imaginarium in the park, parachute games, a giant tug of war, bubble blowing, hula hooping, giant twister, rainbow bowling, live music and more.  Be sure to bring suits and towels to splash in the Walter Sondheim Fountain. It’s fun for the WHOLE family! Saturday from 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM.

14th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race
A race of wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art designed to travel on land, through mud, and over deep Harbor waters constructed out of used bicycles, gears, and parts, created by a lunatic genius who tinkers around in the garage or backyard (Do you know this person?) The machines can be simple, small crafts, piloted by only one brave soul, or they can be over 50 feet long, extremely well-engineered, sophisticated vehicles powered by a team of pilots. All day Saturday. The race kicks off from the American Visionary Art Museum at 10:00 AM.

Graul’s Fights Cancer Days
All six Graul’s Market locations across Maryland will present “Graul’s Fights Cancer Days,” where each store will feature a fantastic One Day Sale, a variety of special events including visits from Baltimore area mascots, live music, a balloon artist, face painter and a number of raffles. Saturday, all day.

Children’s Activities at the Flower Mart
Free to all is Baltimore’s rite of spring. The festival features 130+ vendors selling flowers, garden accessories and unique gifts just in time for Mother’s Day. This year, there will be special children’s activities on Saturday from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Mother’s Day cards, flower pots, What FlowerMart Means to Me drawings, art lessons of origami animals, paper plate creatures, rubber ducky pond, handprint board, face painting plus performances from the Urban Pirates, Krakowiaki Polish Folk Dancers, Lyric Opera Baltimore and a magician!

Grand Opening of Pierce’s Park
The public is invited to join the Waterfront Partnership, Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance, Governor Martin O’Malley, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and the Flanigan family to celebrate the grand opening of Pierce’s Park with a ribbon cutting followed by a day of children’s activities.  Sunday at 2:00 PM.

Reptiphibian Confusion
Reptiles and amphibians are out from their winter hiding spots! Children will learn through games, activities and live animal interactions how the two groups of animals are unique. Ages 5 & up. Sunday at the irvine Nature Center, from 10 – 11 AM.

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
