(cool) mom maverick trick: shaving cream bathtub paint

If you read this blog, you know that I don’t believe being a cool mom requires a degree in Martha-ese, sewing the most elaborate Halloween costume, baking the perfect cupcake or sneaking just the right amount of veggies into your kids’ mac ‘n cheese. It’s about letting loose, being authentic and having fun with your kids. Audrey Hepburn once said the happiest girls are the prettiest ones. I think that happiest moms are the coolest ones.

That said, every once in a while you need a down and dirty, simple, cheap trick up your sleeve to reinforce your level of mom coolness. Today’s trick? Shaving Cream Bathtub Paint.

I can’t take credit for this idea. I saw it on Pinterest months ago, although I can’t remember where. Best part is you have all of the ingredients for this mom magic around the house. You’ll need shaving cream, plastic containers, paint brushes and food coloring. Combine, mix and paint. Easy peasy.

Don’t worry — a few drops of food coloring may turn the bathtub water green, but your kid won’t turn coloriffic.

The Bug squealed when I said go ahead and paint the tub. And unlike commercial products that require tons of scrubbing no matter what the package says (I’ve tried every bathtub crayon out there), this cleaned up in a snap.

The one mistake I made was using “original” shaving cream instead of unscented. So my kid may have gone to bed with that ‘clean shaved’ smell…

Shaving cream paints aren’t just for the tub. Check out how you can paint with shaving cream on mirrors or make shaving cream art hearts!

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
