urban dweller profile: beth, eric, connor and molly

Each neighborhood in Baltimore has its own eclectic charm — and speaks to families in different ways. Butcher’s Hill near Patterson Park is one such place. Today, I’m chatting with Beth and Eric Laverick, who live in Patterson Park with their two adorable kiddos Connor and Molly. Find out made them decide to plant their roots here in Charm City.

How did you end up in Baltimore?
I moved to Baltimore in 2004 after graduating from Towson University. I lived in Federal Hill for four years where I met my husband. We purchased a house in southwest Baltimore in 2006, which we quickly outgrew. We then moved to our Butcher’s Hill home in December 2010.

Which other neighborhoods did you look at? What were the important factors for you?
We were originally looking at homes in the Hampstead Hill Zone, but we were unable to find a large enough house in our price range. We stumbled across our house and fell in love with it. We had a long wish list that  included an off-street parking pad, being close to Patterson Park, 3 bedrooms, and a finished basement.

What room do you and your family spend most of your time in? What activities do you do?
We spend most of our time on the first floor. I love the open floor plans that row houses offer. My son can play with his toys in the family room while I am cooking in the kitchen. There’s also a small dining area off the kitchen – so it is great for entertaining. We love hosting family-friendly date nights. We once had seven families over for a Friday night play date. Everyone brought a pack-and-play for the kids to play and afterwards, we ate – the parents were able to catch up over wine!

Has there been anything that has exceeded your expectations?
Everything! I grew up in southern NH – we were only 30 minutes from Boston, but we didn’t get into the city that much so I never really experienced “city” life. I love being able to walk everywhere. We walk to Patterson Park daily. We also enjoy walking to the Fells Point Farmers Market, Thames Street Park, Canton, the Inner Harbor, friends’ houses and all of the great restaurants! I love that we get to experience “small town” living in Baltimore. We always bump into friends along our walks! We also are happy that the public schools are now an option for our kids. Our son will be attending Thomas Johnson Elementary School for their 3-year-old program this fall. I love that my son is able to experience all of the great things Baltimore has to offer! When I pick him up from school, he always asks to go to the Harbor or for frozen yogurt at Afters!

What is your favorite room?
I love the kitchen – it’s so much fun cooking with the kids and my son has the perfect runway for his strider bike! I wish I had been able to ride my bike in the house!

What events do you enjoy doing with your family at Patterson Park in the spring?
We love the Patterson Park concert series. We pack up the wagon with the kids, a picnic, a blanket and a bottle of wine – it’s so nice having live music in our backyard! The kids have a blast dancing along to the music and we get to see so many of our friends.

Great article! I have one question for Connor and Molly. Connor and Molly: Who typically has the best kitchen race time?

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
