Abrakadoodle, the popular award-winning art and creativity program voted “Best Art Class to Bring Out Your Child’s Inner Picasso,” has brand new digs in Lutherville — and they want you to come party with them.
Join Pat Lakatta and her creative team from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for Abrakadoodle Timonium‘s GRAND OPENING celebration. While Pat has run the program for many years, it’s been run through schools and other locations. The new Deereco Road location is studio space all their own. We caught up with Pat over email to learn a little more about this program and what they hope to offer area families.
Tell us a little bit about Abrakadoodle – and how you got involved?
My involvement with Abrakadoodle stems back to the days when my kids were in pre-school and early elementary grades. I started a school in Jarrettsville, MD for area kids to have music and dance classes. There wasn’t any access to the arts at this time locally. My interest in kids and providing access hasn’t waned. In 2004, I decided to bring Abrakadoodle Art to Baltimore County/City. We currently serve 14 schools (pre-schools, elementary schools) as their Art Department, providing access to art during a time when school budgets art restricted. So, we’re mobile. Our teachers serve as adjunct art educators. It’s been an ongoing labor of love! My family is involved with the studio, as are friends!
Parents often feel like there are so many different activities they could (should) sign their child up for. What makes your classes unique?
Abrakadoodle classes are based in process art-not arts& crafts. Each lesson has been field tested before we ever offer it to kids. We have more than 1,000 lesson themes. Our participants are the artists! Our teachers are guiding them – not telling them how the finished art is supposed to look. So, they are free to create – – if they decide to make an orange sky, they are the artists. This supports skill development in kids’ ability to focus and to make decisions. These are vital at any age! Our participants don’t have to be artistically gifted to take Abrakadoodle classes. Classes are fun, friendly and not competitive in any way. We build art vocabulary each week. Our classes include “gallery,” which encourages the kids to show and talk about their art. We offer classes for 2-3 year-olds, pre-school classes, lunch-bunch after-school and Saturday classes. Classes are typically framed, so that parents (they tell us) have their childrens’ art hanging in special rooms at home! It’s from our home to your home! Parents can register on-line . We’ll be posting summer camps this week. Kids will be surrounded by collections of art done by other children as well as by contemporary artists.
We’re really excited about your new space! What’s your favorite feature?
Jill, Rachel and I have a love affair with every inch of this site! Interestingly, when we were scouting potential sites, it was raining. As we left 9606 Deereco, the sun was shining and a giany rainbow appeared! Memorable moment!
What can families expect at your grand opening event?
Our grand opening event is just that – – grand! MD Artist, Dana Morgan-Gillett is our featured artist. Besides being an Art Studio for Kids, the new site is a Gallery. So Dana will invite attendees to paint on a super-size canvas, a work she has planned. This canvas will remain as a permanent art in the Studio. Several of our art-education-trained teachers will host ongoing classic Abrakadoodle lessons. We’ll have face painting, a kooky photo area, an autograph wall, a live guitarist, refreshments and prizes! A fun and colorful day open house!
