we’re giving away free tix to port discovery’s chinese new year celebration

Did you know 2011 is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit? Or that Port Discovery Children’s Museum is planning a hopping good time to celebrate?

The museum, located near the Inner Harbor, will host it’s annual Chinese New Year Celebration on Saturday, January 29th from 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM. In addition to their regular exhibits, attendees will be treated to food tasting/chopstick training with P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, storytelling by Linda Fang, Chinese lion dance by Tai Yim, a year of the rabbit petting zoo, and much more!

Is your knowledge of Chinese culture limited to the occasional fortune cookie tidbit in your favorite takeout? Here’s the skinny on the New Year holiday, courtesy of wikipedia:

Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year’s Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as chú xī (除夕). It literally means “Year-pass Eve”.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Plan to join Port Discovery for a day of culture and fun! Did we mention one lucky family is going for free? We’ve got a family four pack of tickets to give away!

Want to win the four pack of tix? All you need to do is fill out this form. Want a second entry? “Like” us on facebook and leave a comment telling us you did! A third entry? Sure, why not? Just leave a comment telling us your favorite holiday that doesn’t take place in the month of December.

You have until Wednesday, January 26th at 5:00 PM to enter. Good luck!

When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
