(hot) dish: we’re giving away FREE tix to Kennedy Krieger’s Festival of Trees

With Thanksgiving kicking off the holiday season next week, we know a lot of you already have visions of twinkling lights and reindeer paws dancing in your head. Why not dive head first into the December holiday action the day after Turkey Day with a non-stop car flight to North Pole…

Kennedy Krieger hosts it’s annual Festival of Trees next Friday, Saturday and Sunday (November 26th – 28th) at the Maryland Fairgrounds! A family tradition since 1990 and the largest holiday event on the East Coast, this year’s Festival of Trees will feature a fairyland forest with 600 decorated trees, wreaths and gingerbread houses. The Maryland State Fairgrounds transforms into a winter wonderland with the ever-popular train garden, hourly live family entertainment and SantaLand’s crafts and carnival games for children ages 1 to 92. Additionally, Festival of Trees showcases more than 100 craft boutiques, making it a great place to kick-start the holiday shopping season.

Admission to the 2010 Festival of Trees is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12 and seniors. Children 4 and under are free.

The best part? Your helping to fund the wonderful services and research of the Kennedy Krieger Institute, an organization that dedicates itself to helping children and adolescents with disorders of the brain, spinal cord and musculoskeletal system achieve their potential and participate as fully as possible in family, school and community life.

Heather is editor-in-chief of (cool) progeny. When not scouting the best in everything kid and family, you'll probably find her running The Weisse Group or adventuring around town with her daughter (the Bug) and husband. Can be won over with a good glass of wine or something homemade. Addicted to Pinterest. Only pretends to know what she's doing with her SLR, even though she's got a fantastic lens on it. Thankful it does most of the work for her.

I look forward to reading what others post. Family was always my "holidays"... the holidays meant spending time with my mom. My mom unexpectedly died on xmas morning last year ('09), so I'm not sure what it will be this year. My daughter was only nine months old. I don't want to forget the magic this time of year can suggest. I don't want to my memories to take that from her. -O.

Black Friday shopping with my mom and sister. We would wake up and be out there at the crack of dawn to make sure we got my kiddos gifts. lol. Then we would get everything else on the list. Later that afternoon, we would put up the tree, decorate and make cookies. This is my first holiday without them becuase the military moved us away from home. This year the shopping is going to be just me and my oldest son and we hope to add many new traditions to our holidays away from home.

Waiting for my wife to get home from shopping the day after Thanksgiving. After she naps, we put up the tree and all the decorations and eat leftovers.

My favorite thing to do each year is going to The Festival of Trees. We purchased an 8ft. decorated "Christmas Cactus" last year designed by McCormick and enjoy it all year. You can't help but get into the spirit after going to Timonium. lfcieslak@cablespeed.com

we are modern family

Who, us? We’re putting (cool) back in to the crazy, upside down world of modern parenting. All about raising fun, fashionable, active little thinkers with a strong cuppa coffee on the side.

Takes the Cake. You may know Mary Alice from her reality tv days or from her work at Charm City Cakes, but around this little slice of internet, we adore her for her wit. We love a mom with the two must-have senses for parenthood: common sense and a sense of humor.
